its funny how he it talking about a chip thats going to have 20% more power with 10-20% less power consumption being killed by the competition. i think a 580 with a decent overclock (FTW or SOC version) should give a 5970 a good run for its money (in real games). talking about factory OC here too.

the fact that its going to be 30-40% stronger than a 5870 while being only a little higher on the power draw should be more than enough to make us happy about this card.

and if they did change the internals a little, then i think its ok to give it a new number, maybe not 5xx, but 485 i think would have been more appropriate.
It's hard to say if it'll be enough, I'm pretty sure Cayman will still be smaller than both the 480 and 580. I not sure if Cayman can beat Hemlock, but Antilles will eat everything alive. There is no way AMD will fail to reproduce the 95% scaling we've been seeing with Barts.

If they release for review and we find out they've basically spent a whole year just re-spinning Gf100 while ATI have built Cayman I imagine some shareholders are not going to be impressed. I agree with your assessment on the name

There was some evidence suggesting a possible rename in case of AMD, but it was still deemed inappropriate to even talk about that, because it didn't happen yet.

But, the same people have no problem saying NV is going to rebrand without any shred of evidence or anyone at least hinting at it.
Because it was possible, but it hasn't happened. It wasn't fair to paint that on a company that has only mentioned the possibility of a event compared to
nvidia who has blatantly done this act repeatedly. AMD have removed all mention of the 6770 from their slides, so I think it's safe to say it won't happen. Or at least we hope it won't. As long as they ship Juniper as the 5770 it will probably hurt sales of those but might impress on people to buy the 68x0 instead.
