Bandwidth is bandwidth, and if it can't being used, it's a waste of card space, power, and money!!
Why do 512 if 256 does the same?
And FWIW, ATI cards seem to be more efficient with memory and bandwidth use. See how the ATI 4850's scaled with resolution and AA vs. a G92 card...
