Cable Sleeving Guide

What's the neatest way to do the cables on the Corsair HX1000 where they enter the PSU? On my first one, I ended my uni-sleeving about 10 inches from the end, but I'd like to take this one all the way.

I've searched through the pics here, and about half of the ones on the German threads linked earlier but still no clear idea of how to do it. Thought of taking the cover off to heatshrink into the opening, but that doesn't appear to be as easy as I thought it might be

im facing the same dilemma with my HX1000, so far i have sleeved all the way to the PSU getting the shrink right up to the hole... you have to be very careful when shrinking the shrink not to burn the cluster of cables around it, its very tight...

what im planning at the moment is to sleeve each cable right to the end, then once its done, use some of the big heatshrink, maybe 3cm or so of it, so encase the whole lot right at the hole...

i think that will look neater than having all the uni-sleeved endings right at the hole

edit: Shazza, if you do end up pulling your HX1000 apart and sleeving internal, please take pics and post how you did it, i also thought about pulling it apart, but once i started looking at its construction i got scared lol

OMG im having the worst luck, im trying to de pin the 6 pin PCI-E cable and no go, i cannot get the damn cables out for sleeving with the murdermod pack i just bought, i have tried staples, pins and i cannt get it either far enough in or not a good technique. I can do the 3 pin fan ones fine but my god in cracking the s on this.

Any tips on staples. I have just got standard ones. Do i need bigger? to seems a sug fit though of the standard size.

The best tip is to use two staples instead of one - this gives you a better chance of pusing the tabs down on each side of the pin - plus use something hard to force the staple in rather than your fingers to ensure the staple is all the way in before trying to remove the pin.

i keep trying but nothing.....not sure what to do now, the cable is from a gigabyte odin 800 watt psu if that means anything?

Get a pair of pliers and use it to push the staple in.

umm not sure, just found it in the shed. The shaft is about the same thickness as a 5.5mm drillbit.

try this

1. use a knife or scissors and *carefully* remove all the stock sleeving and heat shrink from the cables

2. now that you have access to the entire length of the individual cables, make use of it, starting at the end that are not trying to remove, wrap the single cable around your hand right up to the point where there is only a few inches of length remaining on the end that you want to pull it out from

3. insert your removal tool, i found using a single staple, bend into the right shape to do the best job

4. get it in there tight, i would use a bit of force (not enough to bend the staple, but a bit), and bang the connector on the bench to kind of hammer it in there

5. using all the leverage u have with your hand with the cable wrapped around it, pull hard and sharp, to anchor the connector down i would have it under the palm of my other hand and most of my body weight pressing down on it, i also had a towel or piece of cloth between the connector and that hand to prevent cuts



other tips

- try to pull perfectly straight so you are not pulling the cable on an angle and causing unnecessary friction

- if its not working, try another connector, and then another and another till you find one that does come out, once you get one out, youll get more confidence and find ways to do the harder ones

- it is possible than the retention pin on the atx connector (thats the bit that you are pressing in with the staple/removal tool) will get bent in the process, use a pin to get it back into shape before re-inserting the connector after sleeving

i do the cables one at a time so i dont get them out of order... how do you deal with this when you de-pin the whole thing?

do you just label every wire with tag? i know when i do USB, Audio or Firewire cables (where all the wires are in one sleeve) i take before photos where i can see the wire colors, as well as drawing a little diagram with the colors matched to their sockets

mullet boy i just thought of a really cool idea as i read your post
it was to have a little punch out holes in a peace of thick photo paper with different pin out readings for your motherboard molex usb audio etc..
this way you could de pin the whole thing and put them in the correct holes and use that to put them back in

There are pics readily available on the web of the pin diagram for the 24-pin cable, plus you can just plug them in the appropriate order into a piece of styrofoam.

@ Cosmos ... yep, this is my second one. De-pinning took about 30 minutes max compared to a couple of days the first time around. Also, minimal cuts I found the part that was hardest on my fingers is removing the pins from the PCI-E connector, cause it's rather sharp. I know I can do it, just want to get the end pieces right.

honestly iv found staples to work really well... you just need to straighten it, then bend it in the exact centre so that both points come to the same length, then get the spacing right so it will fit down the sides of the pin but inside the connector

push it in as far as u can using your fingers, then hammer it in by tapping it on a bench

if you have any atx connectors that are whiteish clearish you should be able to see how far the staple is in and if it has gone in all the way, then note the point on the staple and when you use it on black connectors, youll know if it is in far enough

i originally tried using 2 staples at once, but found it too arkward to get them both in and it provided no advantage, i just use 1 staple.

the key is leverage... if you are pulling using only your fingers and grip on the cable from within a few inches of the pin itself, you most likely have no hope, get the entire length of the cable wrapped around your hand and your whole weight on the connector by either sitting on it your using your (protected) palm

pull straight and hard

the worst case scenario of pulling too hard when the staple is not actually pushing the pins in is that the connector will pull out, and the retaining pins in the connector will be bent back on themselves.... this happened to me once on one side of a connector, i used a pin to bent it back into shape and it was good as new

the retention pins are far weaker then the connection between the cable and the pin, so i don't think you could possibly pull the cable out and leave the pin in the connector

I've done that a few times (the wire comes out but the pin stays put)
its happened to me with a 20 pin cable, and with a 4 pin molex (had to buy pins and a crimp tool to get it all working nicely again, still doesnt look anything like from the factory but i'm not trying anymore)

I never found staples worked. I used different sizes and what not, but they never seemed to work well. I used the Murdermod cheap de-pinner and I made my own out of a screw driver as backup, push it in, popped the wires out, I used gloves as well which helps a ton with cuts.

Oh I 100% agree that a decent remover is the best way to go - the reason I used staples for the guide was to show that you didnt have to buy one if you dont want to and that a cheap alternative is available.
