Try to update the BIOS while using the 4870?
I've tried to update the bios with a usb boot with no success. I just didn't want to pull the loop apart again if I can help it. I guess if I cant find another option, I'll take out the 4870X2's and just run the 4870 until I get the problem fixed.

Only way I can think of is flashing the vga bios to that of another, working card. The issue must be in the vid card's bios. What brand are they? Reference design?
Your lucky yours was good first go. Where you using the box bios?
Somehow I don't think its the card bios, rather the motherboard bios.
