In this image I see you have some very interesting stand-offs.

I'm presently faced with a hardware challenge in my Prometheus project, so I am on the hunt for stand-offs/rivnuts/etc - whatever I can find that will make life easier and with no sacrifice to aesthetics.

Do you mind if I ask what are those standoff assemblies you are using?
Is it just a screw+nut+threaded pipe?

Langer, I chose to go with cylindrical standoffs from Digi Key. I used "brainwashers" - a discovery of Nils to provide the base for the standoff. Without the brainwasher, the standoff would be loose since the base of the screw head would have made contact with the standoff and not the aluminum plate (because of the countersinking). Does that makes sense? What's nice about the brainwasher over a normal washer is the recessed seat that the standoff sits in. While it may not serve as pure function, I really like how it looks. They also really enhance the visual appeal when used with screws - not to mention protect powder coated surfaces from chips since they're plastic... I guess that makes them functional after all.

I hope this answers your question - I'm really looking forward to seeing what's next for Prometheus!

It's very funny you should say that - one of my aggravations is not being able to take better action shots while working. I'm trying to figure out a solution so I can get good shots while working with both hands. I've thought of a tripod but it seems so cumbersome and would likely break the work rhythm. Perhaps a robotic arm is the answer indeed!



Project Update: Still waiting on the final light panel which is kind of holding things up ATM. It should be any day now and once its done, things should start moving along nicely. I'm working on a mount design for the SSDs and have some interesting ideas I'm hoping will work out and ultimately compliment the build. I could easily go pure function but I'd like to first try something a little creative. Of course, it will either be great or a bloody eyesore... Oh well; nothing ventured, nothing gained eh!

Ahh it's the 'brainwahers' that made it pop for me as well, I've never seen a washer with a rolled up ledge like that. It actually looks like it could be a kit the way it fits together (MurderSpacers maybe? lol).

Project Update: The murderLight panel is done and I'm very happy with the result. There was actually a funny moment earlier tonight as I was taking a few quick pics. My wife came in and said: "wow, that's really cool". Here's the thing - she's never done that before which either means I'm really onto something or you guys will hate it!

Still waiting on the Mips chipset blocks that Kirk is having Nickel plated but I thought I'd at least give you guys a peak at what the illumination does to a motherboard - keeping in mind it's recessed...





I think once all the innards are installed, it's going to be really something!


The res holder is in final production after a round of revisions - hopefully pics in the next few days. The other custom job are the SSD mounts which have yet to go to production. Truth is I'm still wrastling with the concept. I'm hoping to spend some time on the design over the next few days. The rad has been mounted and once the Mips arrive I'll work on the loop and drill the holes through the murderLight for the hoses. I'm really anxious to see how that looks!
