Curious, any of you guys switch from a Quad to one of these for any particular reason?

They clock way better, no way you reach 600 fsb with a quad and for gaming it's mostly unnecessary to have a quad

BTW I've got the 3.8Ghz Q6600 in my sig and this E8500 @ ~ 4.5ish. Still debating which one I should keep. Dammit it's my gaming rig, the other one that encodes and acts as server is already 3.2Ghz quad, it's a hard decision - I love the quad but I do think 4.5Ghz is faster...and looks more exciting!!

I dunno if you guys test or what not but do the e84/8500s really use 100 less watts than the Quads?

I understand your dilemma, but I have a simple solution, keep them both
It's not like the E8500 costs $500 or so

Well thats the thing I need to "liquidate" a few things I dont need 2 monster CPUs - even though I'd love to keep them both. Also, I have a tendency to swap back and forth... sometimes more than once a day. I need to break that addiction too lol!!

I just got my e8400 stable (15 runs linpack passed 100%) with the vcore at 1.344 idle cpuz, vcore 1.625 bios, and 1.30 vtt. Im still up in the air about load-line calibration. I dont like the sound of the voltage spikes.

Pencil mod vdroop! Have done it with my last 2 boards, P5B-D and the P5K-E. Disabled load line calibration feature cause I'm droop free with a few strokes of the #2

There is a pencil mod for your board.

    Lightbulb LinX - a new Linpack front-end

Hey, guys. Sorry for (possible) offtopic but I'd be grateful if you would check out my new Linpack front-end.
It looks a lot like Orthos, has a simple GUI and a real-time error checking which IBT lacks.
And since LinX is Linpack-based it's the most stressful test for Intel processors available to date.

Do you guys with Quads find when gaming it's nicer having a quad to take care of background stuff or say running other software? Or do the e84/8500's clock high enough that they can take care of everything? Or do they actually take a pretty big hit if you start doing something else or running like a virus scan or something?

Sometimes your virus checker comes on automatically once a week. I was surprised several times when Norton was running a virus check in the background while I was online gaming...until I turned off this automatic feature.

My E3100 (E8400) uses over 50% of the both cores, even for an older game like Battlefield 1942, despite having a 8800GT video. While playing d/l movies from the hard drive only uses 2-3% of the cpu. I don't think many games actually utilize all 4 cores, it has to be programmed by the game designers to use more than 2 cores.

I set all my AV/defrag stuff to happen while I'm at work; that way the only one it'll piss off is the wife.

I'll have some OC stuff for my e8400 here when my new board finishes crossing the Canadian border.

Nice! I completed it which is cool, bumped FSB up a few notches and left the same voltage and it failed. Combined with Prime95 and OCCT this might be a quick and easy test before a 10+ hr prime. I found it to heat up my CPU more than Prime or OCCT.

Gonna swap out the lapped e8600es in my sig (4.3ghz @ 1.35v) and bolt a TRUE on it. Off to ebayland with you my e8600es! Funny how my e8600es would have been so godly just 6 mo ago but now with higher ghz at lower vcore chips popping up the choice is obvious unless your ram can't handle it.

I have found something else strange with these chips. I can prime, OCCT and LinX with this chip at 4.5Ghz. But I get some strange crashes in games. If I back it off to about 4.4Ghz its fine. These 45nm chips just don't seem 'reliable' I guess. I dunno, it seems I have alot more problems with stability than I ever did with my 65nm quad.

Anyone of you guys using the E8400 with the DFI Blood Iron P35 board and getting at least 4ghz clockspeed? Are the Gskill PC2-8000 2x2GB modules the best to help me achieve such a clockspeed?

has anyone bought an E8400 from scan.co.uk? Did you get the E0 stepping?
I emailed them and they said they have a high turn around for that chip so the likelihood I get the latest version is high but not guaranteed.

Sad. Mine would boot up to 525 (and maybe more) but anything above ~480 is pretty unstable. Try upping NB volts. It probably can't handle 4GB at that clocks.
