I supposed something like that old OCZ RAM Booster should be able to work here allowing one to to boot and adjust the settings. I never liked the OCZ booster but good thing I didnt sell it in case I experience this issue.

Any help would be great.
Voltage 1.328V for what speed (incl. multi & FSB)? Even on the crappiest chip that should give at least 3.7-3.8GHz.

Also 1.40V vTT/vFSB is not necessary, I run 1.20V for my chip at 400 FSB, with Qx9650 and P5K-E, and it's stable with the lowest vNB.

Guys I am trying to find out if my current PS is compatible with this mobo. I keep reading about a 12v P4 connector and my PS only has a 20+4 for the mobo and the regular 12v and floppy plugs. I dont see anything special. Do I need a new PS?

PS Just talked to Asus and the tech told me I could just plug the 20pin to the 24pin on the mobo and use that 4 pin for the connector next to the CPU.

Recently got a P5K-E and E6750 and just read through this thread over yesterday and today. Very useful information here for a new P5K-E owner so I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed their experiences here testing BIOS versions and whatnot.

One question I've been having that doesnt seem to have been answered is about core temp readings. I am getting different readings whether I check the BIOS, PC probe II or through the Core Temp program.

    Idle temps:

    BIOS - 13C
    PC Probe II - 11C
    Core Temp - 21C

I'm assuming Core Temp's reading is the more accurate one as it reads directly from the DTS but it still seems a bit low to me. I do have an aftermarket cooler, an old Thermalright XP-90 (AS5) with a vantec tornado spinning at about 2800RPMs and my current vcore is only 1.125 (1.1 in CPU-Z from vdrop). Anyone care to elaborate on why the readings are different and also why they seem low?

    Some other info...

    P5K-E rev 1.02
    BIOS v1006
    CPU currently clocked at 7x400FSB = 2.8GHz

What is your ambient temp? If you don't know exact then approx.

The readings are possible with a very low ambient.

    How are your load temps?

Ahh, I knew I forgot to mention a couple things...

Yes, ambient temp is usually pretty cool, about 68F (so that's about 20C I think). I also just switched to an Antec 900 case which is known for dropping temps a good 5-10 degrees from what they would normally be so maybe I'm just not used to seeing such cool temps. My last CPU A64 3700+ idled at 30C.

As for @ load, core temp while running Orthos topped at about 38C (Core Temp's reading). So do these Conroes just run cooler or what? Also is the P5K-E/Asus monitoring utilities known for inaccurate temp readings? I want to be certain on this before I start OC'ing and stress testing. Advice is appreciated.

I just got all my p5k-e and I am already loving it. Have the e2160 running at 3.2ghz @ 1.35vcpre stable and didnt take much more than rising the FSB and a few options here and there but mostly all in auto. Of course I will push it more but its nice to see this kind of performanace right away and coming from the Opteorn 165 (main rig) its stunning to see 18s run of SuperPi 1MB ! lol

Guys can you help me with that HD Audio BIOS setup. What is that front panel they mention in there. Am I supposed to set that up as AC97 or what? I keep getting the HD audio show in device manager but no drivers are installed.
    Thanks

Just enable it via SoundMAX. Preferences -> General -> Independent Front Headphones and restart Windows.
It depents upon your front panel case connector whether you will set AC97 or HD Audio. Read the motherboard manual.

Yes i did try. only one memory stick fail in both ,yellow and black.
tested them at a different rig rig both are fine.no crashing...
i think it might be bios related,
because now i have a strong evidance that the moudles are OK.
guess i'll know when the next bios comes out...

    First time post

    Hello everyone,

I've been lurking around and reading a lot of the incredible information from here and decided to post.

Due to some odd events, I recently picked up one of these ASUS P5K-E Wifi boards (rev 1.02 shipped w/0906 BIOS) from my local Fry's along with 2gb Crucial 6400, an E8400 (Batch 748) and a el-cheapo ATI card. (was low on funds due to the last minute purchasing.) I also have a cheap WC setup kit that was for my old P4-1.8ghz that I am now using on this setup.

I must say that I am quite impressed with this board and haven't had any issues yet. Although I am currently running stock settings as I am still trying to learn more about all the settings I will need to tweek should I OC.

I would like to OC the system soon though. Especially since even though the WC setup is a cheap kit, my CPU has not gone over 30c while running Prime95 large and idle is 27c. Granted this was also on stock settings and assuming that the readings from both the ASUS tool and Speedfan were correct.

I remember seeing a post about how to cofigure CoreTemp to adjust the tMax of the CPU. Anyone else remember this? As currently it shows a tMax of 105c when the E8400 I believe is supposed to be lower? Of course the reason for this is I would love to achieve a 4ghz 24/7 OC on this board and CPU.

So to sum up, my now current rig is:

P5K-E Wifi (Rev 1.02, Flashed to Bios 1004)
Intel E8400@3ghz (Q748) I'll edit with the full batch when I get home
    2x1gb Crucial Ballistix 6400
    PC Power&Cooling Silencer 750 quad
Diamond Radeon 3650, 512mb Video (crap card )

And lastly an old Lian-Li full tower case and a el-cheapo Danger-Den WC kit.

I've got a lot to learn! So any further info or recomendations ya'll want to share is awesome!

The asus pc probe software is reading temps from a sensor on the mobo don't
trust it. I recommend using unklewebb's Realtemp program.

1004 (or 1006) is the bios you want so your good there. Also
set your vcore, fsb term, and pll manually, the auto settings can be too
high for the 45nm e8400 to handle.

    Defaults for these are:
CPU Vcore: depends on your VID prolly 1.1125v, you can check with coretemp.
FSB Term: 1.10v (My two work best at default yours prolly will too)
    PLL Voltage: 1.50v

And when you start Overclocking Disable "Transaction Booster" It makes
the timings too tight for cranking up the FSB Freq.

Oh and don't get too crazy with the vcore, there is some controversy about this so
if you want to be on the safe side stay under 1.36v

    Read here:

    Good Luck

Oh and don't get too crazy with the vcore, there is some controversy about this so
if you want to be on the safe side stay under 1.36v

    Read here:

    Good Luck
Awesome, thank you for the info. I plan to play around a bit today. I also have read enough to know that I want to try and keep the vCore not only as low as possible, but to also keep it (for the 45nm chips) below 1.36v if at all possible. Personally if I can't get to 4ghz with 1.36v or below then I won't be too heart broken. 3.6 to 3.8ghz is still a TON faster then what I had before.

So those are the only settings I have to mess with? Nothing with the memory voltages or timings or anything? I have read a number of people adjusting all those as well. Not to mention a few who needed to adjust the mem settings for thier OC.

Wish me luck as I plan to play around with some of the settings you listed. I'm thinking of going for the 445x9 to get the 4ghz. I just hope it won't require over the 1.36v. If so then I'll just have to back it off to the highest OC I can to stay under the 1.36v.

And as promised my E8400 is FPO/Batch Q748A211, VID of 1.1125.

As for the temp software, I've been using more then just the ASUS stuff (but will stop as recommended). I've been using SpeedFan as well as CoreTemp. I wanted to try a few different temp software to make sure I was covering my bases. haha.

    My yeOlde Rig:

    ASUS P4B-266
    Intel P4 - 1.8ghz (512k cache) Northwood (Socket 478 even)
    1g (512x2) Corsair XMS

So needless to say.. HUGE upgrade here. lol

EDIT: Well with some of my quick testing I'm able to run at 445x9 (4005ghz) with only a 1.30 vCore. Temps from Real-Temp are at C0-53c max, C1-52c max under load. Although CoreTemp and OCCT are showing 61/60c under load. So I'm unsure as to which to believe. SpeedFan and the bad ASUS Probe II are showing CPU@45c and MB@34c. So it seems as though my temps are ok under this load. OCCT has been quite stable although Prime95 hasn't been very successful. Any ideas?

My next thing to try is to change the RAM timings from 5x5x5x18 to the rated 4x4x4x12@2.2v

Wish me luck that nothing decides to go poof. hahaha.

    Looking Good

The thing with the temp monitors, Coretemp (and most others) have Tjmax
set to 105c this (from what my research tells me) is too high, Tjmax for
these guys should be around 92c-97c, realtemp has Tjmax of 95c smack
down in the center of that range. So I would consider realtemp to be
    closes to accurate.

Yes you will definitely want to tweak your ram timing and voltage.
And yes 4x4x4x12 @ 2.2v looks on par. Make sure your "FSB strap"
is set to 400, it will allow your mem to be 1:1, and if your mem
    won't do 4x4x4x12 @ 445mhz (890mhz) I would lower the FSB until
the ram gets stable. You'll loose a little MHz on the CPU but it's
worth keeping your ram timings tight.

Well I tried to set the RAM at 4x4x4x12 but no boot/post at that FSB although I was able to go 5x5x5x15 fine. After some more tweeking last night I was able to go to 450x9 with 1.325v idle (1.35v in BIOS iirc), 5x5x5x15@2.2v. I didn't however know about the strap so that is set to auto I believe. I did set the 2.2v for the RAM manually due to what you said earlier about some of the V-settings might be set too high when running on auto.

When I get home I'll try to set the RAM back to 4x4x4x12@2.2v again with that strap. If it's a no-go then I'll start lowering the FSB in increments to get a good config.

In other news, I did also notice that even on "stock" settings, for some reason I couldn't ever get past about 10 or so minutes in Prime95. So I know I'm missing something here. Although I must say that even though it hasn't been Prime95 stable (even on stock) I have had no issues when playing any games for hours periods. Not to mention while playing games at the OC settings my temps in RealTemp never went above 43c. I guess my games aren't as much of a load as I thought. Granted the junk VidCard I have doesn't help.

Yeah, mine will pass prime95 for hours (>8) one day and fail within 10 minutes
the next day or so. However Like you I have not see a single problem in anything else (games, video encoding, etc.) so I'm getting less concerned with
the prime stable thing. I run my FSB @ 440mhz that's all my PC6400 will handle
@ 4x4x4x12 timings (actually 445mhz works ok but I like to have a stability
buffer) anyhow I am very happy with the performance like it is, as it blows
any stock pc on the current market away!!!

EDIT: If you are having to notch your FSB down too much because of your mem, try 2.3v on the mem, it should
be fine, but you may want to do a touch test on it while running a game, if it seem way hotter that it was @ 2.2v
you may need some active cooling on it (i.e. a fan).
