Below I took some snap shots similar to those found in the article. Let me make it clear it's impossible to get a photo of the "exact" same spot do to the movement of the camera in the demo. However, as you can see these photos dismiss any LOD excuse some may believe is happening.
Distance is further away then the SS in the article
This SS is a bit closer then the other. I would consider this in the "ball park" of the SS in the article.
However as you can see, the detail even at a distance further then the SS in the article the detail is similar.
