I've only done one mount thus far, now I want to get a apogee GT on there and see how she goes vs. a bowed apogee gt.
If this is in comparison to the previous tests you ran then I don't think it'll outperform a bowed block if its only a couple degrees better. It might certainly be better than a stock storm but I doubt there is going to be very much improvement vs. bowing. Now coming up with a method to apply pressure directly over the die instead of outside of it might be worth trying.

If this works well would you be willing to let us send you our blocks and have your machinist do his magic? For a fee of course.
RIP Dad. I will miss you always.

Hmm. stepped Apogee GT has just performed better than any of the 5 bowed mounts thus far. First stepped deltaT is 25.52C. Best bowed GT is a deltaT of 25.61C. Not definitive, but does show the step may be better than a bow... off to remount.

Think I'd call that performed the same as.
They are deltas with your comparison method for ambiant temp variation allowance. So there's just no way you are accurate to that extent.

you could have saved yourself a whole lot of time and effort and money by just removing the IHS and the 755 retention clasp.

i think we should thank nikh instead of criticizing. even if this does not preform
as well as he hopes, he sacrificed HIS time and hosed 4 blocks so you don't have to.
in conclusion ... give him some love

I don't see any criticism from me. Nik is striving for accuracy and is strong enough minded to not need smoke blown up his kilt. I posted my appreciation earlier in the thread.

I know this sounds stupid, but does anyone want to try an MCW60 modded to fit 775?

    [img]http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9679/normaldf7.jpg/img]

Then the bow came, and it was pretty darn good (almost too good in this pic, oh well, these were done quickly):
    [img]http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1870/bowedvd4.jpg/img]

Now nikhsub's great idea to increase pressure by reducing contact area, but I imagine it will still have a concave tendency (as depicted):
    [img]http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/3346/nikhno1.jpg/img]

Now just a slight bow with Nikhsub's reduced contact patch would be 100% ideal, IMO (but damn hard to machine I'd bet ):
    [img]http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4023/bowednikhvm6.jpg/img]

This assuming the bow is created because mounting pressure is along the top edges, and will happen to the entire base uniformly (or nearly). Nikh's idea to put the pressure back in the middle is awesome, but until we can mount with pressure down the middle, there will always be a bow (theory).
haha. what a fantastic dummy-proof jpg instilled explanation.

    good work.

Well I firmly believe in the step... I'm having the G5 done... I asked my machinist if he would be willing to do blocks for folks if they wanted it done. He said he would do it but would need a max turnaround of ~10 days or so. IDK cost yet either but I imagine ~$25 or so.

No one needs to thank me, I'd be doing this with or without an audience, it is more to satisfy my own curiosity than anything else. Those of you who have known me for a while know that I am insane - I believe I single handedly started the 'Overkill' revolution. Been too busy to run more tests but I do believe that stepped bases are far superior to bowed bases. We can have a flat WB surface and a flat (if you lap that is) IHS surface for excellent results. The beauty of step vs. bowed is stepped is flat and can be run on naked cores as well where bowed would be very dangerous and not recommended on bare dies. Stepped bases can also be lapped gently if needed (to remove surface scuffs) where bowed bases can never be lapped. Also, bowed bases once mounted are forever distorted and become terribly warped.

In closing it is my opinion that the community as a whole would benefit from such a change - there is no downside to it.

I still intend to run 5 mounts of the Apogee GT and GTX with the stepped base and the Fuzion with the stepped base for DIRECT comparison against their bowed counter parts.

Well, I will surely say thanks.

Please let me know also about the base machining. I have an original Cathar G4 Storm I would like to get done, as well as a Fuzion. Please PM me with info when you find the time.

I imagine he's thinking more along the lines of the fact that the MCW60 has a stepped base already. Because it's using the original Apogee pin layout, I have a feeling it wouldn't work as well, even if the step was the right size.

Nik, how does the Storm compare with the Fuzion and GTX when all have the stepped base?

The storm performed better stepped than unstepped 2-3c or so, but the apogee GT with the step is far better... the storm is just not good on an IHS'd CPU.

Meh, as long as we know what works best, I'm not crying over my Cathar G4.

And I'd like to add my thanks to the pile also. Hopefully the bock manufacturers will incorporate your ideas into their future designs. ...And pay you.
