"Generally speaking, CMOS power consumption is the result of charging and discharging gate capacitors. The charge required to fully charge the gate grows with the voltage; charge times frequency is current. Voltage times current is power. So, as you raise the voltage, the current consumption grows linearly, and the power consumption quadratically, at a fixed frequency. Once you reach the frequency limit of the chip without raising the voltage, further frequency increases are normally proportional to voltage. In other words, once you have to start raising the voltage, power consumption tends to rise with the cube of frequency."

just a note we shouldn't really take this as being the pinnacle of DX10 considering its an RTS (based on DX9). What you can really see about the change from DX9 to DX10 is features like this:
    - Alpha to coverage anti aliasing to improve quality of alpha test objects such as shrubs.
    - Thousands of additional 'litter' objects in the world.
    - 3D short grass on the terrain.
Finally the merits of DX10 are obvious, tons more objects without such a performance hit. Only thing holding this game back is the fact that there is a DX9 code path. But at least DX10 gets the eye candy for now. Man do we have a lot to look forward to in DX10 only games .
    Can't wait!

Man, this update is borked. Performance is way worse (but ultra-quality on the terrain is selected instead of high) and some of the effects are gone. Like in the performance test, once they turn on the searchlights, with the DC9.0 codepath, you see bloom/HDR going wild. With DX10, it doesn't even look like they switch the lights on

whew, definitely a little more taxing with the 16xQ CSAA

core 2 duo @ 3.15GHz and 8800GTX work fine with everything maxed out and dx10 enabled.

Those new beta drivers fixed the graphical issues, although there's still a bug where the water doesn't reflect the sky. No idea whether this is intentional or not.

Performance still sucks. Either the new 3D-grass is REALLY taking or those DX10 drivers are still really early. My minimum FPS droppen from 28 to 7. Average from 48 to 28

Btw, imo DX10 SSs looks better most of the time. But if this is at a dramatic FPS loss / higher settings...
