As a complete non enthusiast unaware of the former above: 1gb vs 2gb omg only $20 more. Tempting toss up decision.

I hope there is a price war between GTX 560 and 1gb 6950.
That was a good question, what do you choose when these is so many "almost the same"-AMD-cards with different prices?.

We have 6950-2GB that can be unlocked to 6970 already, and soon you will get a 6950/70-1GB too. All these will probably perform the same for most gamers (who are using 24" monitors). The way I look at it, it's going to be really hard to sell those "expensive" 6970-2GB in this price/performance mess AMD has created.

Yep, I hope for a good price-war too, but it won't be just between GTX560 and 6950-1GB. If nVidia gets aggressive (with different flavors of GTX560, maybe a 2G too?, combined with a price-drop on GTX570, etc ..) , it will create a mess for AMD. Because all those 4 GPUs (which perform almost the same for most gamers, but have a big price-difference) will kill the "expensive" 6970-2GB, practically. Nobody would by it, unless they drop it's price too, but then it will affect the price on AMD's other 3 GPUs, in a circle.

What a mess!, AMD's GPUs have to fight each other, but the real "enemy" would be nVidia-prices, and from the look of it, that's gonn'a be a aggressive enemy, and it can get really ugly soon. Because these AMD-cards will probably perform so alike (for most gamers), that if nVidia push one of them (or tow of them, depending on 6950-1GB unlocking capability) to bottom-price, it will piratically push all of them to the bottom-price. Because otherwise those "expensive" cards (with same performance for most gamers) won't sell.
Specially if 6950-1GB can be unlocked to 6970 too, then AMD will have 4 cards with "same performance for most gamers", and have to sell all of them for the bottom-price which nVidia is going to dictate soon. But we have to wait and see nVidia's move to comprehend this mess totally.

I am going to guess that they make the 1gb version flash proof. But if not, your logic is flawed, either you need the 6970 2gb and have the money to pay for it or you don't. Its more options for the consumer. Not everyone games at 2560 resolution or eyeinfinity. If anything this will cannabilize 6950 2gb only sales. However the $20 difference really makes the consumer think about it a bit longer in justifying.
This is a smart move by AMD. They need something to battle the GTX 560 at its price range and at the same time mitigating manufacturing costs.

A 470 clocked to the same provides me w/ quite a bit more performance and allows me to use HBAO. So IMO, a 560 vanilla will be the bare minimum to enjoy that game @ that res for the discerning user.

Probably because I live in Phoenix and have a pair of Fry's around, but it has definitely reached widespread availability for me. I routinely get SD alerts for etailers w/ SE models in stock including Newegg, Amazon, and Tigerdirect.

However, they're ALWAYS more expensive than the 768's and rarely less than the 1 GB's as far as "deals" go. The EVGA's also come in a very sad little box.

I want to hide them everytime I see them in the store...almost like I'm ashamed to be seen next to them.

EDIT: In regard to that little Silverstone case...and especially the FT03...DO WANT!! I'm no he man and carrying this 800 lb Stacker to LAN's isn't the most exciting thing in the world to do.
the GTX 560 is going to destroy the GTX 470 and will be a large upgrade over your 460 as well. there is allot to be said for that extra shader block. also BC2 is one of the most intense games on the market so considering a your sub $200 card handles it so far thats pretty dang good. I don't think the SE is a bad card, it's just not priced correctly, price under $150 and it would rock.

Yep, they batter make 6950-1Gb flash proof, as you are suggesting. Otherwise AMD will have 4 cards with "same performance for most gamers" on hand, competing with each other, and fighting nVidia-price on top of that.

Even those with big pocket won't pay too much extra for 6970-2GB, in my opinions, specially if they get a reasonably priced alternative soon. We have to wait and see what kind of alternatives shows up.

Yeah, I think $20 difference is good and reasonable price-difference for cards with "same performance for most gamers" too.

sure it will destroy..not .... dont forget that the gtx 470 can oc quite good and has a lot more shaders... a stock 560 was 820mhz? well many 470 can do 800 on the core without any voltage increase. perhaps the 560@1ghz will be better but even the 570 is not that much faster than a gtx 470@820-850... my friend is very upset that the gap is so small once gtx 470 is oced compared to his 570 that is also oced a bit. for example 3dmark 11, heaven and bc2 the card are neck to neck witch iz crazy. we both have athlon 2 x4 at 3.3-3.6ghz machines. either way I really dont see the 560 as a 470 killer...

Price it at $200 an it'll be a 470 killer. My 470 clicked to 850, but the amount of heat coming out of the poor psu made me sad.

    + 1
But 470 is not going to be a difficult kill anyways, it would happen at higher price too.
Price it as I've already predicted, at $199, and it will kill anything you trough on it, is my bet.

200$ way to cheap imo, im guessing somewhere around $260-300

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

It's possible, and you may be right, but I believe it will directly depend on AMD's 1GB performance and prices.

I personally expecting ~100$ price-drop on 6970/50-1GB to start with, ruffly. But that can probabley drop too after a little while. Based on these assumptions, I'm predicting $199, but it may still be +/-, depending on the final price and performance of 1GBs.

As it looks like AMD prices the 1gb Version at 279$, the 560 won't cost 199$. With performance little under 6950 250$ seems right.

Interesting, is this 279$ the final and official price? In case, for 6950 or 70, locked or unlocked?

Read $279 for 6970 1GB somewhere. That would probably be the card to get for us 20 inchers.

That was a mistake 6950 1gb is gonna be 279$~ so im guessing this 560 is gonna be a little under that like everyone is saying ... 230$ would be quite sweet imo, 200$ doesn't look likely.

UPDATE: AMD said that instead of released model 6970 with 1GB of memory it would release the Radeon HD 6950 1GB graphics card. The initial release contained a mistake.

Advanced Micro Devices late on Monday announced the incoming of premium-class Radeon HD 6950 graphics board with reduced amount of onboard memory at $269 - $279 price-point as well as

That was the "million dollar question", a very good question indeed.

I guess, AMD knows that the final price-difference will end up as $20 anyways. As I've already said on top this page: those GPU with "same performance for most gamers", have to sell for almost the same price. So $20 price-difference for 2GB sounds right, but I'm afraid the base-price is not up to AMD to decide, AMD may wish the current base-price, but the real price is going to dictated by nVidia soon.

Maybe they have been reading my posts? In this way they will avoid to have too many cards with "same performance for most gamers" on hand. AMD made a smart move here, but this a change of plans.

XBitLabs' original info was wrong. AMD's original news release was wrong. AMD fessed up and sent out a corrected email later in the day.

HD 6970 2GB remains the high end card and likely won't have a 1GB variant unless any upcoming NVIDIA cards perform better than expected.

Plus, the 1GB version of the HD 6950 shouldn't be too much of a surprise since anyone who read the release-day articles would have seen AMD already spilling the beans in mid-December.

You say "AMD's original news release was wrong", that's positionable, but I tough they had QA on newses releases. Anyways, I'm wondering if this is a "change of plan" at last moment. A smart move, anyways.

No, it's not. Their original news release stated there was a HD 6970 1GB but then sent out a correction and apology which said the HD 6970 portion of the email was a typo.

    thats a 100$ typo
    a 6950 1GB for 20-30$ less than the 2GB version sounds like a waste
most people buying something for almost 300$ hopefully are keeping it for about 2 years, which will probably push that 1GB to its limit.

I have used GTX 470's in fact allot of them and they do clock very good your right about that. but what was possibly the best ocing video card in GPU history? GTX 460...

yes the GTX 560 is clocked high to start but if you don't think it will OC well then you need think again
