Yep, this is very logical. If you can follow with the logic. Maybe I have to repeat for you.
AMD should somehow "upgrade" the 6970-2GB to take a good fight with 580. But they chose to "downgrade" it to 1GB to make it cheaper and fight in mainstream.
If nVidia gets aggressive, and I believe they will (with several flavor of 560, price-cut on 570, and maybe e new GPU, etc .. ), then AMD has to sell 1GB mainstream card really cheap to compete. This will create a BIG price-gap between 1Gb and 2GB. AMD won't be able to justify that price-Gap for "2GB gains", and have to reduce the price on 2GB, but this move will affect the price on 1GB too. This will go in a circle.
What makes this even a bigger problem: These 1GB and 2GB would probably perform almost he same for most gamers on 24". So the "cheap" 1GB eats most of the marked for 2GB too, on top of what nvidia eats.
