Well he can expect better (much better) performance per watt as GF100, reason being not alleged GTX580 excellent perf/size ratio but horrible perf/size ratio of GF100.
If something is just HORRIBLE at first, its to be expected that new chip can have greatly improved stats on this matter.
Barts improved decently on a chip that has better perf/size/power ratio than GF100.

Nobody knows anything sure about improvements on upcoming high-end cards, but the fight will be between 580 and Cayman, not the 480. In this fight, the performance will be the most important part (as usual for high-end cards), and then heat/power-usage and price will play a big role too.

Some people are amusing/speculating that Cayman will have great improvements, but they forget that 580 can have it's own improvements too.

This is not looking good. A full fledged GF100 in disguise?

I think it will be much easier to decide in this round. Because last years "peace" is over now. They are releasing GPUs (with new-numbers ) like crazy, right up to each other's back, LOL.

This will bring out speculations, previews, reviews, etc .. right on top of each other, and will give us consumers a much better opportunity to discuss, compare, and make a more educated choice in this round. This fight will push down the prices too, for sure.

By the sound of it, Nvidia is out for blood this round. However, if AMD delivers on Antilles, AMD will be the clear victor and will own the performance crown this round. Nvidia will have to be content with 2nd place.

Here's to hoping for a vicious price war. I want some powerful GPU's on the cheap.

Id like to see the 580 match or even beat cayman xt - since that will drive Antilles prices a bit lower =D . I might be hoping for too much though, AMD had one year to work on Cayman, Nvidia had 6 months for 580.

Yep, I think we will see a really aggressive fight from nVidia in this round. The resent price-drop to counter 68xx, and 580 to counter Cayman, is a great proof of an aggressive nVidia in this round.
I think we can expect several other GPUs, in all forms and shapes, right at the time when AMD tries to make a new move.

We have just seen the top of the ice-berg. The fight is just starting, and it will result in better and cheaper GPU, from both camps, in my opinion.

Cheaper GPU prices would be lovely so lets hope both companies make really competitive products

Cayman WILL have great improvements as you call it, or great changes as i call it, because we know for sure its a big move from amd to go 4VLIW and with such a big chip.We dont know tho if this big changes will reflect greatly on performance (hence the improvement part) thats to be seen, last time ati made a great innovative chip, it failed.
However with GTX580 we dont have any solid info yet, with rumours going from fully unlocked GF100 to "kind of" 2xGF104 in one package. No big overhaul for sure tho.

Did it ever occour to anyone that this could just be a super duper OC GTX580?

Maybe the 772Mhz figure is right and this 925Mhz one is just some water cooled beast that is cherry picked and no one will be even able to buy.

So the "normal" 580 will be about ~15%, maybe ~20% higher than the GTX480.

Your 580s will last about 6 months at that rate.

I think NV is pushing every ounce out of these 580 because that know Cayman is a BEAST!!!

I hope so... I'd love to upgrade my GTX 470's (SLI) to something cooler & way faster. With any luck, both cards will rock, and we'll get nice pricing on them + good performance instead of just the latter.

I think its as neutral as a fan can get. All he is taking about is simply competition and not really the destruction of the other company or beat the crap out of the other company.

Look at the cayman thread otherwise and there is hype like no tommorow. Antilles is being compared to a god(human sacriface, come on) and honestly, it gone from being slightly funny to ridiculously nerdy. Heck they are card bashing left and right anything nvidia and basically your calling this guy a cheer leader when all he says in a post is nvidia is providing good competition for AMD.

    Talk about a narrow perspective.

    from it168.com and pcinlife.com

    Memory bandwidth: 192,4 GB/s

    Texture fillrate: 49,4 GTexel/s

Latest viable launch date: 20th of November.
That would throw out the 128 TMUs rumor, and pretty much confirms its higher clocks for bandwidth and 64 TMUs

Given his posting history, he's not being 'neutral' by any means, unless you too think that the 6xxx is a fake generation, and 5xx is not

so your ok living with a rebranded P4 for 3 generation ????

cool ... but im not ok with it .. we need technologie to be pushed as much as it can .. and no marketing gimmick to stop it ... and what amd did is great .. smaller chip .. lower price .. same performance .. and with better drivers they are starting to feel even faster ... so its a win win here ... but i dont want recycled old tech over and over

I find these self confessed 'neutrals' who need to qualify their every statement about loving both companies more creepy than people with perfectly human loyalties to whatever intangibles we're talking about.

Nvidia is fighting back aggressively in this round. It's a fact, because of a good price-cut to counter 68xx, and a 580 to counter Cayman. Are you denying nVidia is fighting back? In case, try to defend your view with arguments. Short Slogans doesn't count as argument though.
