But if these #'s that cold2010 posted are accurate (and personally, they sound about right from all the rumors I've seen).
I'd still go with the 6870 over the 5850 as long as the prices are close (<$250)...
All these pages of uproar over the numbering scheme seems like minutia to me...
If Joe Public is stupid enough to pay and extra $200 for a Pre-Built with a 6870 compared to a 5850 then it's his own fault for not researching what he's buying, and quite honestly, he probably wouldn't notice the difference anyway...
If theres any ripoff blame to be placed in that case it would lye on the shoulders of the Pre-Build manufacturers and not AMD (IMHO)...
If I was already running a 58xx series card I seriously doubt the upgrade would be worth it.
But coming from a 4870, I would (and will) choose the 6870 over the 5850.
If for no other reason than the improved tesselation, lower power draw and the potential for driver/code tweaks to make the 68xx's perform even better...
We should all know next Friday, and if the price of the 5850 drops to ~$175 I may have to seriously reconsider my options...

If that above pic is accurate, then the 6850 has 1120 SP's and the 6870 has 1280 - which to me seems plausible. I think it's also likely that the shaders going from 5 way to 4 way is a good idea, seeing as since the 2900 came out all those years ago, even though on paper, the shader clusters have an impressive throughput, the problem is actually making all of them busy. They overcomplicated things just a little too much, wasted die space in the process, and hit a practical performance wall.
Of course, right now, EVERYTHING is speculation, as there has been no kind of official release from AMD or board partners to state the actual specs, so everything has to be taken with a fairly sizeable pinch of salt.
I was looking into replacing my HD4850 with a 5770 but i'll wait til christmas, see how everything pans out.

I dunno if this question has been answered, but can anyone confirm that there's going to be embedded lucid hydra chips on the 6000 series? An article on overclock3d has hinted the possibility and i was just wondering if anyone knowns anything about it. SOURCE
Hybrid Lucida have nothing to do with GPU's directly, they are on the motherboards and use their own drivers.. i don't see why they will going on ATI GPU's.

I highly doubt that Bart will be a 1280 SPs chip after knowing that the diesize is just around 230 mm^2, how many SPs can be inserted into a 390 mm^2 Cayman if 230 mm^2 Bart has 1280 of them ??? Well, perhaps Cayman is bloated by GPGPU features (more cache, better DP support, perhaps even matching nVidia's ECC support ?), so even with the same ROP number, it will only add around 50% more stream processor compared to Bart.
Not really, it would be a suicide to put it there now.
It still needs profiles and they are far behind what NV or ATI has to offer now in their drivers. They also lag behind badly, when a new game gets released. And it doesn't support Win XP or DX11.

You give toooo much credit to those whom these mid stream cards are targeted too. A consumer can consider many things when purchasing.. the simple color, or sticker on the box might influence some, More so than a model number. I don't see you defending all these other preambles..

As the people who this is geared for, are still on 8800 GT's, etc. Many gamer's this Holiday buying season will want a DX Win 7 complaint and AMD is going to make sure people know what Win 7 offers... and that DX is a standard.
Secondly, is that these card themselves are going to be short lived.
Lastly, we don't even know the specs, so heavy speculating, on anything other than architecture use, is an exorcise in gullibility.

Looks promising. I think AMD is doing 6000-series right. They are making the most efficient architecture even more efficient. Throwing out shaders they don't use and adding performance at the weak spots.
If those speculations are true then I think 6870 won't be to far from 5870 performance wise. And somehow I think 6870 will overclock better.![]()
