    Well,

    -I run 3x1920x1200 in eyefinity.
    -I'm also an ex-8800GTS 320 user. Heh.
-1GB is already starting to show some weakness at 2560x1200+ with AA. How is 1GB going to look a year from now? 2 years?
-Rage engine can use as much texture memory as you feed it.

    Hmm ....
dont need 2560x1600 or higher actually, just need to change settings in the game engine to make use of the increased VRAM.

hint: most games dont by default

    So it's not useless.
Plus if you read the second article you will see that games such as AvP, Metro, Stalker, Crysis and Napoleon: Total War can easily consume around 1.5GB of VRAM at 2560x1600. With just 4xAA.
Hell, throw GTA in there at any resolution. And Oblivion with extra mods.
And what about the stuff that might come out in a month? 6 months?

Are we talking about console options? Because in the world of console ports, somehow I don't believe it.

If you read my post and came away with the theme being "1GB is enough" then you did not at all understand me. I wanted 2GB cards last year. I'd love to see 8GB on a GPU, but it's of course impractical at the moment.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

many techniques to enhance image quality of console ports are brute force and will take up a substantial amount of memory. this could be done by higher resolutions, AA, or changing LOD settings although it might not be a full 2GB for certain games. maybe this is a little off topic but i would expect future game engines to focus on scalability. megatextures in idtech will be able to use main and video memory effectively even with consoles as the main target. tessellation and voxels have also been used for scalability and are a big focus of next gen games.

one of the major points for more VRAM i must make is that if no 4GB card ever comes to market then no software would ever use 4GB of VRAM. the hardware must come first.

I mean in the most popular game engines for PC there's no setting for the engine that explicitly tells it how much VRAM to use. Bumping up AA / AF levels is more likely to be core dependent if you have 1 gb.

that 1120 shader rumor doesnt sound right at all ... even with improved efficiency i dont see that card taking a stand against 480gtx's let alone what nvidia will get out as the 500 series in 2011 ....

That's because AMD decided to rename the card that should be a 6770 to be a 6870, and the 6970's will be the high end single GPU... or at least, that's what the current rumor is. If that Cayman photo is correct, then ~X12000 puts it at 5970 levels for a single GPU

    Actually there are in some.

Crysis is one, for example. I think there's a thread in the nV section by Carfax with the options listed.

Cant say i've ever seen anyone toy with the settings and do testing though.
