what is better to heat the card - furmark or kombustor?

*Coming soon* Stacker 832 Rebirth!
furmark is not a good program on the new cards, it pushes them way to far. ATI actually has built in limits when running furmark so as to protect the card. evga has a new OCing tool that will test the card fully with out pushing it beyond what is safe
New Rig in Development
Current Rig: i7 950 (HK 3.0 CU Block) : ASUS WS (Koolance Blocks) : eVGA 295 GTX CO-OP (Swiftech Full card Block) : 6GB Corsair Dominator XMP memory : Highpoint 4320 raid card : 4x 128Gb SuperTalent MasterDrive SX's (Raid 0) - OS : 2x 300GB WD Raptors (Raid 0) - Caching Drive : D5 pump with Bitpower top running to 360 rad for CPU & MB : MCP355 with XPSC Res Top to 120mm rad for GPU
Block looks great!
but in that loop, damn those temps seem high? just the way that Fermi rolls?

Furmark does stress the GPU harder then Kombustor, and thus generate more heat from the GPU. However I feel that the load generated by Kombustor on the GPU are closer to what you are likely to see when running actual games, whereas Furmark, and running it for prolonged periods of time to prove "stability", is more of an E-Peen enlarger.
The fans on the 2x quads are spinning at around 400RPM though... I love how I can game at 900Mhz core on the GTX480 and not hear a thing.
I do agree that Furmark is not great at setting playable clocks/volts for the GPU. I could still see artifacts in for example 3DMark Vantage when Furmark runs 100% stable for long periods of time, and had to increase the core voltage further.
I'm sure if Nvidia didn't include the IHS on the GPU we would see much better temps like those on the ATI. But yes, Fermi is that hot even under water, and are destined to be watercooled to unleash it's full potential. Also nothing scales performance wise as great as the 4XX series when overclocked.
How often can you say your GPU water block is worth every penny from the performance and sanity gained?
Here is a screen shot of my latest Furmark run, inspired by the "GTX480 EVGA Hydro Copper O/C & Temp Test results" thread.

Thanks for posting your results. I have a 470 on the way. May have to get an EK block for it. I have been real happy with the ones on my 3870's.
Used the included pads or thermal paste on pads spots ?![]()
Wow that's crazy, I wonder if this can be considered a valid performance preview of what to expect out of the stock cards when they hit a die shrink at the end of the year.
Damn close to 1ghz, should be crazy fast. I wonder how close a single card overclocked to hell and back is going to be to to an sli setup at stock clocks.... maybe 70 percent of the performance?
very nice thread - as it is currently difficult to find tests with a GTX480 and the EK waterblock..
i have since 2 weeks 2x EVGA GTX480 in my cubbard - waiting for the coolers to come..
QUESTION:
what do you guys think - is the card as overclockable in SLI as single? 900MHz on a SLI would be nice to have :-) my chill is more than enough (MoRa with 9x 120mm Fans + 2x 140mm Radi)
as i want to get out now my ATi HD5970 (also with EK Block) - had too much troubles, no physx, and mine is less overclockable than other tests that i have seen of it..
next week my ordered "DARK POWER PRO p8 1200W" will arrive too.. really looking forward to build in all the stuff![]()
