Probably posted somewhere here, but there could be 2 editions of the gtx 480 coming out.

One with 512 shaders as well as the 480 edition. Its probably going to be an ultra with an ultra like price. Hopefully they bump the clocks up a bit like they have done in the past.

The 64 TMU is a big yikes those. If half of them have been disabled, then it's waiting for the next gtx 485 it is. With the decreased bandwidth and texture fillrate, I can see even with extra shader power why this thing is alot slower than it should have been.

if you are going to link a non english page how about a translation or interpretation of the text instead of posting a link that 99% of the people here cant read anyway or cant be bothered to attempt to translate using google translate?

It won't give clicks to that page, and XS news is all about clicks nowadays.

I doubt anyone but Kim Jong da Illest could even afford a computer there.

Freedom of information is pretty low on the list of everything that is fcked up with that country.

There are probably more computers in Seoul, South Korea than there are in North Korea as a whole...

Anyway, why is nvidia selling Fermi to the chinese gov't.?

and NK does not have that freedom of accessing internet, let alone playing online games. maybe you're mistaken them from S.Koreans? or maybe you've some grudge on asians?

Nvidia is starting to piss me off really. They need to grow a pair of balls and just admit if they can not keep up.

    Fing idiots.

ATi is probably going to be adding me as a customer in a few months.

I'm half Korean. I'm a minor going to a high school. I live in the United States. It's so funny how the United States is so segregated about asians. Blacks and whites get along fine. Thats one race now. Asians...or "chinese" kids always get the **** now. I'm quite tired of it and if anyone needs to be be racist on a forum like that then fine. Dos has his wish. Some people humor me.

    Anyway,

It would have been nice to see some Fermi benches by now in something other than a label-less graph straight from NVIDIA on the Heaven Benchmark....in DX11.

I'd like to have seen some real stuff. Maybe they won't show it because Fermi isn't even up to par with the 5800 series...they had the lead with G80 by far, but no..."forget R&D and lets just refresh our architecture...it'll last 5 years for sure"

Weird cause I am white and my brother in law is Asian lol

Im from a small town in Missouri and honestly you do not see much of any kind of racism or segregation around here. Humans are humans no matter how they look. For the ones that are racist dude just ignore them it shows how ignorant they are.

Its kind of like anyone not from USA automatically judging any one of us for just being from USA.

I don't think he was being racist by joking about cheating in an online game... it's a common thing just like joking about "chinese gold farmers" in MMO's . Don't take personal offense at it. As far as "blacks & whites being one race now" don't say that within earshot of Al Sharpton and co. ! Sadly a lot of animosity does exist due to perceptions of racism, even though I don't think many really are (which is of course, on that front, a good thing that it's dwindled down to near-nothing). The area I am from would easily be considered, stereotypically, a bad one for that, but in reality it is not.

We'll see the real benches/info soon enough on Fermi... it would have to be a MASSIVE failure for me to not grab one up, at least the 470 if I don't bite on the 480. It is looking like the 470 may be a far better value while retaining most of the speed, so far however.

How much does TMU have to do with gaming performance?

If they are disabled like neliz has said and they are still there what was the reason? Power?

Were half of them disabled to make the reported cut in half for double precision performance?

I recall Nvidia said somewhere that TMU were old and not that required in a interview let me just search the net i'll update this post..

I found one reference but its also a old article still it holds water tough...

NVIDIA : TMU is an obsolete term, by the way. It's a leftover from when the computation (blend stages) was tied directly to the texture read ability (texture stages). This is no longer true, since the TNT architecture. Modern hardware has texture loading separated from a processor that allows calculation and blending of texture addresses and interpolated and evaluated colors. Very soon, there will be powerful pixel processors where the number of textures that can be read is independent of the number of instructions that can be part of the pixel program. GeForce3 is the first of these processors. Most software developers do not wish the hardware developers to accept a high level shading model and handle multipass for them. The software developers want to program this themselves. Given that there are 10's of millions of TNT2-class graphics cards out there as an installed base, virtually ALL mass-market titles need to support rendering to 2 texture hardware, with multipass. Most physically based lighting models (such as BRDFs - bi-directional reflectance distribution functions) decompose cleanly into pairs of textures per pass. GeForce3, which supports 4 textures in a single pass, is a simple acceleration from that: every 2 passes can be collapsed into 1. For that reason, I believe that Radeon choosing to support 3 textures is an odd choice.

Maybe. Most sources now agree that GTX480 is a 480 cuda cores, 250W version.
Though I think another version with 512cc, 275W TDP exists and we might be able to buy it sooner or later.

how do you define broken then? there is spare logic in almost every chip nowadays, and its broken in quite some... yet the chip remains fully functional. so is that broken or not? and who says the gtx480 chips with 480 sps are broken? its very likely that the sps on at least some of them are fully functional, they just run too hot or require too high volts to clock high, or they clock really low no matter how much volts you feed them... would you prefer a chip with all sps enabled but much lower clocks and even higher tdps? when it comes to asics there isnt really fully functional and broken, theres no hard seperation between the two...

imo broken for an asic refers to logic errors, ie the logic doesnt process data properly in some scenarios... thats broken... a chip with disabled units is not broken... it has A broken block or A block that performs below specs, but its not broken... and most chips these days are sold with at least some logic disabled in their volume skus, and not because they are broken, but because mfcs want to differentiate their skus from one another. most entry level and mainstream chips have cache, cores or some extra logic disabled, even thought it works fine. are those broken as well?

dont think too much about this, in the end, it doesnt matter anyways...
well, not to us... it matters for analysts and for nvidia themselves, cause it means less highend parts and lower asps...
and its not like ati COULD produce such a massive chip with good yields and nvidia cant... just take it for what it is, and judge it for what it is... who cares if it has 1024 sps and half are disabled? if you cant enable them, then what difference does it make... whether they are broken, or just disabled for some other reason... whats the difference?

whats up with those wild tdp rumors?
nvidia spreading bs again to confuse everybody?
the 480s tdp is rumored to be between 225W to 300W
the 470s tdp is rumored to be between 215W to 250W
or maybe the 300W figure is for the 480 ultra with everything enabled and the 250W is for the 480 sp one?

and still no new benchmarks of the 480?
its less than a week to the launch...

I think that after 6 months Nvidia will make a big surprise with GTX 470/480 and in a good way...NDA is very severe because of that...
It seems that TDP will be 215W for 470 and 250W fot GTX 480 not so scary and epic fail...
And also it seems that until 6 april the stock will be very low...almost inexistent...and the cards will be overpriced by sellers in some countrys like Romania.
