Or to force things like micro transactions, cut out modding completely, disallow custom settings, etc. etc.
I mean hey, why not take more extreme measures to slow down piracy. Worked really well with MW2. It surely didn't end up being the most pirated game of the year in a matter of a mont.....ohhhhhhhh
First comment and registered today? So how long have you been working for DICE? They pay well?
Only it doesn't really slow down piract at all :/
This is very true. Also reducing (or removing altogether) the amount of user made content and the game's longevity: You can play the first Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 even now simply by setting up a DS. You will not be able to play Modern Warfare 2 two years from now i bet since they will want you to buy MW3
Mods add a lot to the game's longevity.
L4D has both centralized and third party servers, and even let players filter between the two so if you want a "pure" experience you can play on those exclusively. But you can go play on modded servers with custom rules and maps if you want to. Everyone is happy. The multiplayer games you buy with centralized servers will never last as long as those with decentralized servers.
All this being said, MW2 could really benefit of these kind of "closed" dedicated servers, so the lobby creator doesn't need to host the actual match. If they are going to keep their position on public DS, this would at least get rid of the lag problems.
MW2 has many problems aside from using a listen server format, with not being able to control what map you connect to being near the top of the list.
