Bad Company 2 dedi servers must be rented from DICE host

While unlike Modern Warfare 2 Battlefield Bad Company 2 will be having dedicated servers on PC, gamers and clans won’t actually be able to build their own but will have to rent servers directly from DICE authorised host.

The code needed to build and set up dedicated servers is being withheld and won’t be released with the game. This is a first for the Battlefield series as both Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 both launched with those files available and fully supported the building and hosting of dedicated servers. Battlefield Bad Company 2 Producer Gordon Van Dyke told Eurogamer in an interview that this was being done to “protect the game’s integrity on PC”.

Protect the "integrity" on the PC. Suuuuuuuuuure. This reeks of "Holy cr*p MW2 bombed on the PC without dedi servers, let's slap this on as an afterthought and capitalize on MW2's lack of dedis with marketing!"

What's with this newfound fear of real third party dedicated servers?
