Piracy mainly. You can easily modify the DS files so any user without a legit CDKey can join in.
Also reducing (or removing altogether) the amount of user made content and the game's longevity: You can play the first Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 even now simply by setting up a DS. You will not be able to play Modern Warfare 2 two years from now i bet since they will want you to buy MW3
Mods add a lot to the game's longevity.
The multiplayer games you buy with centralized servers will never last as long as those with decentralized servers.
All this being said, MW2 could really benefit of these kind of "closed" dedicated servers, so the lobby creator doesn't need to host the actual match. If they are going to keep their position on public DS, this would at least get rid of the lag problems.
