It honestly depends on what card you had before this generation.
What card did you have?
Fermi not going to have much on the low end initially, so going 5770 can make sense since the wait is going to be longer, and from your choice of the 5770, your not buying ultra high end and its likely you had something slower than a 4870. So there might be tangible notices in games aside from crysis.
If you did have a 4870 or 4890 or a gtx 260-285, that would be a poor poor upgrade and a waste of money.
If you had something like a 3870 or even a 8800gt, I can understand the upgrade.
I think it always a poor decision to buy at scalped prices, that simply throwing money away and falling victim to the hype.
Its kind of a elitist thing to say you were able to enjoy 16x AA and 16x AF instead of 8x AA and 16x AF. Direct x11, its irrelevant at the moment until more games came out and if dirt2 is any indication, game programmed specifically to take advantage of directx 11 might be to slow to run on max settings.
This is not CPU, where time is money, so it not an investment, this is gaming.
What benchzowner has hinted at, people wanting to play alien vs predator on high settings are going to be in for a shocker with cypress and directx 11. Considering dirt2 runs at 48 FPS at 1920*1200 with 4aa and 16 af, it might be smart to wait for a faster card.

What happens if the 5870 is too slow for future directx 11 games? If there was games to really take advantage of directx 11 and the games that need speed beyond SLI gtx 285(aside from crysis), I could understand kadozer, but there isn't really any.
Building on my original argument, what if someone buying a fermi is better set for the longterm(instead of the short term benefit in your scenario(and the little benefit at that)), so instead of waiting a bit, the person who is bought a 5870, is stuck with a might be too slow for the future, or not offer the best visual possible on future titles.
I think a smarter thing for stefan to say ignoring emotion on stefan part is this. Smart people will buy fermi or wait for the 5890 or r8xx refresh. That way, people buy a product that is price in a market that has competition and by that time, more directx 11 titles will be out. In addition, someone doing the above is likely to enjoy much longer term benefits than short term benefits involving crysis(depending on the hardware they had before) and a couple of directx 11 titles.
The direct x11 speed of dirt 2 should be frightening to 5870 owners.
