It's been 3 years and Fermi is late and I would be shocked if they could release for sale by the end of January.
I'm kind of wrestling with the idea of buying an HD 5870 at the moment, after getting tired of waiting for the GTX 380.. I had one in the cart at Newegg the other day, but I cancelled it at the last minute.

When I think about it, I don't really need it. My GTX 285 plays all the games I have at 2560x1600 perfectly, with the exception of Crysis but I don't even have that installed. Even upcoming games like Mass Effect 2 should play well on the GTX 285..

The consolization of games has meant that video cards can be in service for much longer before the need to upgrade arises.
