Higher memory frequencies lead to reduced latency at the same timings, but you need looser timings to reach higher frequencies. They don't necessarily always offset each other.

Honestly, I'd think going 1gb to 2gb should make a difference with these newer cards at high resolution with AA/AF(who DOESN'T buy these and game at high resolution though), but it's too early to know.
Thanks for the response, yeah, I'd be gaming @ 1920x1200. Though anything will be a huge improvement from where I am now. They've left the $499 pricing spot open, it's debatable on whether they're using that to drop the 5870x2 price down to that upon the GT300 launch or if they'll put the 2GB 5870 in that spot once they have higher yields. I'm wondering if $100 extra is worth it or buy the 1GB version and xfire later on.

    Decisions... Decisions...

Whatever my choice, I'm sure It'll be night and day for me in comparison to the card I'm using now, lol.

i have a hard time believing the marketing slides that some have been clinging to for performance numbers, ati are claiming a 240% performance increase over the gtx295 in some cases.... i can't help but feel that's a bit optimistic....

I'm hoping the 1GB cards will be adequate for 1920x1200 for the foreseeable future. I can see the 2s being the way to go for 2560x1200 or those running games on multiple monitors but I don't see more than 1GB being necessary yet ( I know there are the odd exceptions but they are rare enough ; the question is how will the next generation of games / engines be memory wise )

I suppose the efficiency of data compression also needs to be taken into account. If I remember right the ATI cards use less VRAM than the comparable Nvidias. I only expect these newer ones to improve further on that.

I considered waiting for the 5870x2 but I think I may just go dual discrete cards this time as I would like to get one at first and get a second down the road along with a new psu and W7.

My guess is it is similar to SLI GTX285 FTW, although its true ATI takes less perf hit with the extra bells and whistles so maybe a few percentage points ahead.

Claiming 3.4x GTX295 performance? Please give a link of where they would be claiming that...

We'll see, even ATI only claims (on their promotional poster) that 5870 is 38% faster than the GTX285 in Crysis with AA/AF (30% w/o), and a FTW GTX285 is about 10% faster than the standard GTX285.

A 285 FTW already is 80% of a 5870 in Crysis, how fast is "much faster?" If 20% is "much faster" that would make the 5850 96% as fast as a 5870, which for some reason I don't think is the case.

Yes, but we still don't know on what CPU (clock, model), what RAM, etc.
Crysis tends to be CPU dependent quite a bit.
I'm personally looking forward to tests with highly OCed i7 as a base machine (3.8GHz-4.4GHz range). Then we will be able to eliminate most of the CPU bottleneck

Anyway my HD4870CF is already sold, where is my new card!

You sure ? Last thing I heard it was up to the manufacturers themselves, to deviate from the initial launch specs... I would be surprised if we got already a 2Gb model at launch date... mostly reference cards at start and maybe later some modified cooling ones. Later down the road some different ram versions... that order would be logical...

Well, there are already 2 GB cards with GDDR5 out there. The chips are there, the PCB don't need to be changed, do they?

Seeing the frenzy of some manufacturers with high amounts of RAM on slow cards I think it would be a wise decision for them to offer 2 GB-cards as well to distinguish themselves from the rest. "Twice the amount of RAM, twice as fast!*"

"* Only on very rare occasions."
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks
