Hd5870 - $299

I'm looking forward to Anand's review for a detailed explanation of the architecture & die. From what I've been reading it sounds like two 40nm rv770's slapped together without crossfire drawbacks + dx11 + shared MC & rops + extras. Don't know if that's true next gen, but Anand will give a good explanation of it!

While ~ £199 is a nice looking launch price for the upcoming 5870, remember that we're talking about donanim haber here, a site that's about as reliable as fudzilla and twice as spurious in it's claims over 'leaked' stuff, just so it gains an increase in site traffic. Totally skeptical that this is accurate, and more than likely, prices will be nearer to £269 for us, once VAT @ 15% has been added.

It's not that we want to raise the price, if it turns out to launch and retail at that price, all well and good, but history has taught us to be skeptical on such matters. We're simply acknowledging that it sounds "too good to be true".

I expect ATI and Nvidia to make this level of improvement, especially if as stated by jaredpace, there is a 2gig version of the 5870.

I think you're not. To put it short, you can't expect ATi and NVIDIA to make the fastest advancing technologies in the world, or otherwise they are failing... usually number of transistors, processing speed, memory capacities, etc, doubles more or less every 2 years (Moore's Law). What make you think that if a graphic card manufacturer doesn't double this rate then it's failing?

You mention some past examples (RV770, G80) but you fail to mention that those examples were epic milestones in the history of the company exactly because they were performance jumps much higher than expected and both had a gross impact on the market. Probably other examples can be found during the history of both companies (Radeon 9700/9800, for example, but I don't remember if that was a doubling or not), but you shouldn't consider everything different than an epic, historic success as a fail...

+1. That's why I won't compare ATI's previous aggressive pricing. The scenario is totally different now, its on their side.
Worth mentioning that its going to be the first for the DX11 race, and its a big jump.

But I guess I'll just leave the rest for "Sept." or "Oct" time to decide.

spot on 4870 retailed at the same price and my card iirc was £257 so I expect the same again

Well, scenario is different now, but I don't think that being aggressive with prices at this moment would be nothing strange or bad thought. Last round ATi forced NVIDIA to ask really low prices for their enthusiasts cards, punching them hardly, but they couldn't regain much market share (NVIDIA sacrified their income to keep their share more or less safe). ATi even tried a higher price cut that partners didn't accept because "the current prices were perfectly competitive". I think AMD is desperated to recover market share, and maybe they see the oportunity of being a couple months (maybe more, depending on NVIDIA) the only DX11 hardware vendors to ask for the most tight prices they can to monopolize sells during this period...

This is AMD people, they won't sell it too high because they can sell more and make more profit overall if they price the 5870 at $275 instead of $399 which is out of consumers reach.

Think I'll be waiting till Sapphire launch a Vapor-X version of the 5xxx series or HIS if they bring out an IceQ version, not that desperate anyway don't mind waiting a few month.

Was it ever substantiated that the 5000 series is truly a brand new architecture (and not a 4000 series with relatively fewer changes, ie dx11 reworking and a smaller node)? 'Brand new' is a subjective term, but you know what I mean.

I'm still of the mindset that it could be a very short cycle time to the 6000 series... and that the 6000's were what we were expecting performance wise.

At the end of the day, I wont jump straight on it. Truth be told I'll wait for sata3/usb3/cheaper ssds... because I have to use the same system for things other than games. I fear more that the first batch of motherboards with these features will have such things connected poorly such that they operate much slower than they should more than I worry about ATI's next gen.

Whatever video card is fastest when a motherboard with those features comes out, is what I will get.

On a side note.. I would have assumed in X2 setups (never owned one) that one card can practically shut off completely when not gaming. Given all the whinging about multi card setups and drivers, why not get a mobo with 2x16 slots and just crossfire? That way you can always sell the second vid card if it doesnt work out for you. Less board options / less power consumption at load?

that's my upgrade path, except I might get a new card before that and add it to the mobo

299.99 is a fair price for the 5870, 400 bucks the way things are right now would be bad for ATI. Assuming the 5870 is 400 bucks at launch, then the x2 is going to easily be 500 or more.

so 299.99 seems more realistic with ATI's price history

same here i will wait a month or two for better coolers. I made the mistake of getting 4870 512mb first week, and man the cooler is loud at full gust. easily fixed though, the stock coolers work quite well

4870 dropped in at overclockes @ £260~270 so I think you will have to do some serious thinking



I think amd will just charge same as last year this time they have 2 months (atleast) of dx11 only hardware which should gain them some market share, and people have to remeber that nvidia had to price match to be competitive and keep there marketshare but this time around i doubt they can be forced to loose money on chips AGAIN as the board will be like "FAIL! MOARR MONEY FOR OUR BONUS"

$299 is too low. Performance will be around GTX 295 level so expect prices to be slightly lower than that. I'm betting $399 for the 5870 and maybe $299 for the 5850. The source is either wrong or wasn't clear about which model the pricing was for, it only listed "cypress" pricing of $299, but the 5850 is cypress as well.

I also think $299 would be too low for 295 performance...

This is a 1GB GPU correct?

A single card that runs at 295 performance level, with 1GB of memory, and DX11 for $299 would be outstanding in my book...

That would change the pricing of all GPU's on the shelf, yet to be sold.
Good for the consumer, but bad for the GPU dealers.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

With the expected price and performance, it will sell like hot cake. When I first got my HD4870 at launch and newegg did such great service when they refund me 20 bucks since the price dropped like 2-3 weeks later.

Just as I predicted several times. Due to this price I don't expect "more" than 30~50% (depending on settings and game) performance gain for HD 5870 over a HD 4890

As almost always the case, you can expect a single 5870 to perform about as good as two of the previous generation part. (so two 4870's).

For $300 it will kick serious ass.

AMD doesn't care about the 4870x2 after release. They've already moved that inventory. Even the 3870x2 can still be bought for $300 but I wouldn't recommend it.
