When the MLB/NBA/NHL/NFL were first created people complained that they were just trying to exploit popular hobbies for their own monetary gain. However, that turned out pretty well for those who competed in those hobbies, no?

Not only will the competitors have access to a metric-ton of free hardware, but they will also have the opportunity to get paid to overclock. I fail to see the exploitation.

Therefore, if The Overclocker were to gain financially for organizing all of this, I have zero problems with it.

there isnt that big of a diference in gpu clocks and there is no gpu binning going on, well at least so far :/

about team intel, well yeah, of course not...
if you could get a handpicked cpu from intel then how would any other team have a chance?
seriously, try to see this from everybody elses perspective there for a minute

    or were you just kidding?
you cant compare the two... all you need to play basketball is a 50$ or less ball, once in a few years maybe, and a pair of 200$ shoes, and the latter isnt really necessary...

its about selling hardware here, and the way companies are starting to use overclockers to mislead cutomers and buy certain hardware rubs me the wrong way, and i dont see it changing all the sudden, just because...

dont get me wrong, sure, if ocers get paid for clocking and benching and theres a fair competition going on and it helps to push mfcs to improve their hardware, hey, thats great... i just dont hope it happens on the back of the average joe user who gets misled to buy hardware that doesnt perform as good as advertized...

its not exactly like the F1 either, cause nobody really buys an F1 car... if you would compare F1 and overclocking then its as if the F1 would be racing with propper F1 cars but build a carbon fibre cover for them to make them look like their best selling street cars, and claims its the same thing to boost their sales, but actually people buy a diferent product than what they see winning the races...

    see what i mean?

if its really in propper F1 style and its non retail silicon vs non retail silicon, and nobody claims its retail silicon then thats fine... but thats not how intel and amd play right now...

and yes, hipro and giorgiprimo in one team is kinda weird, but sounds like fun

So let me get this stright, sorry I might be a bit confused.

It's the manufactures who are picking the team members or OverClocker ?

From what I see, ASUS wanted someone, but that someone did not want as he had time constraints .

    somewhere along that line....

Pretty exciting the conversations going on....

A bit of both. The manufacture teams are not going to sponsor somebody who isn't valueble to their marketing dept. They want big names and good skills. I don't think that their actively picking, but they do have a say of who they will sponsor.

Thanks for putting this together Nick, I have high hopes that this will have a major, and positive impact in the computer enthusiast community worldwide!

    Hmm..

I definitely would like to be in this event

Great to see MIAHALLEN representing Team MSI. Lets see if I can also get invoiced

This sounds like a great and fun event. Definitely the wave of the future.

I really like this idea and really want it to succed, but so far I'm impressed on how close both Formula One competitions (cars and OC) are, even when the OC hasn't even started. And more if you look how hot is F1 (cars) right now. All the topics discussed can be directly translated from real F1.

From who and why chooses the teams to the restraining rules about what equipment is allowed.

And IMO, if it's going to be a "race" to the limit, the rule #6 shouldn't be there.

    6) All kit used must be on sale by the beginning of the month of the task. If another team wants to buy it, it must be available. We do not want specially-manufactured components which have been built purely to win a race... unless it’s fully available to the public.

If it's going to be with the best OCers, make it with the best equipment (like in F1 cars, noone can get these parts). It's all about who has more money and resources. I say this because it's going to be really difficult to know if someone is getting (and using) cherrypicked processors. It's not like the FIA-OC can go to everyone's place and check their systems before the "race".

I can understand the rule was introduced trying to balance things for the teams that doesn't have the money or the connections, but to hope that the ones that have it won't use it is pretty innocent, even more if we're talking about a possible future with "OC Professionals" with priced money involved...

There's no way to regulate and catch the cheaters, at least not now without any tool that can tell you everything from a system, like including the manufacturing date and full stepping of a processor in the benchmark result so, at least until there's a way to be sure that noone can use picked hardware, the rule is just pointless.

Just curious.. lets say you are benching for Team EVGA.. are you required to use all and only EVGA parts? There is a roudn where AMD CPU is to be used. EVGA only has the older NVIDIA Chipset for AMD Cpu, and no AMD Chipset mobo. Would they required to use EVGA's AMD mobo, or can they use like Gigabyte or Asus Motherboard?

Or is it truly like racing.. if you are racing for Team Honda.. you won't be using Team BMW's gear for a different race.

    Just curious.

What's up Ton...you missed the post where Nick took me off of Team MSI, and put me up for Team USA...

As for your question, I think it depends on the sponsors and how they work our your contract (if there is one...now or later). Obviously the non-manufacturer teams will have sponsors as well, but I think they'll have more flexability in the equip they choose to use.

I don't quite follow the OC = F1 though; when you step into your race car you pretty much know how it performs, you know the limits of your hardware; you have to drive the course with skill at maximum speed to succeed.
Overclocking is getting a good sample of hardware, applying your tweaks/cooling and hoping for the best; if you're stuck with a lousy engine (random!) you're out of the game no matter how good your skill is.

That's why we're given a month per test, and manufacturer support to get us the right goods (just like F1 drivers). I think it correlates well except for only release HW...but I agree the the decision regardless.

This has always been my point, just like F1 the guy with the best engine will always win just like overclocking MHZ is king.

It is great to see the big overclocks and results from great hardware, but for competitions everyone should be limited to the same speed to show who is the best.

Hey man!! With all due respect Paul, I don't agree.
Being the "best" means being able to push hardware farther than the next guy as well. When you limit cpu speed, you remove that dynamic. There are really many elements at play... tweaking/efficiency, the skills and knowledge to push any piece of hardware to its fullest, experience with subzero clocking and the kind of preperation that it takes for long bouts of benching for actual real world record level overclocks(not 1-3hr event), quality of cooling, THE WORK ETHIC that this kind of benching(real world record benching) requires, the ability and knowledge to bench a particular piece of hardware HARD over and over without killing it, etc, etc , etc.
While it is a a big factor, its not about just having the fastest chip, that is a myth lol. The "best" overclockers prove this time and time again.

I think clock limits might not be the way to go, but I am not sure yet. If it is true F1 style then it should be the best of the best of everything hardware wise IMO and I think INTEL/AMD should pony up killer silicon as sponsors to ALL the teams. It will be that much more exciting IMO if the rankings are all tight at the top. I can go either way clock limits or not doesn't matter to me Whats more exciting and will generate more public interest?

Seriously I don't think there is anything to not want about this comp. Sure there are a lot of good overclockers out there that are capable for something like this, but there is a head limit on the league. Eventually, the cream always rises to the top. This will be no different I suspect. Manuf and sponsors are going to want guys on their teams that WIN PERIOD. If you don't place high, they will look elsewhere for other "drivers" it's that simple.
Do a bunch of people vote in some fair process for who gets to drive for any particular f1 team ?? Manuf are free to pick who they want to represent their company and who they think can win.

Ok so the alternative to a league like this is to just leave things the way they are have manuf. seed guys with really cherry hardware to show off for them? This is a perfect forum for that kind of stuff to go on. I want more and more and I WANT IT NOW!!! Manuf need to develop budgets for their teams just like f1 or any other racing for that matter. They take what knowledge and experience they got from "racing", and that tech can be used to develop products for the mass market.

Also I don't get the country classification of non-manuf teams, shouldn't it be more like privateer classification or something? These guys will still get manuf support just like the other guys. This will eventually be the pool that manuf can pick new "talent" from for "factory" teams. Working your way to the top of the league would be something like get invited to the competition(most likely based on past benching accomplishments or community presence), make a strong showing in the league maybe winning a round or two or placing at the top of the rankings end of the season, manuf likes what they see and asks X overclocker to join the factory team and get PAID for the next season!!!!!!!!(you hear that evga???)
Thats sort of how I could see this evolving. NO ONE is safe on any team really, if you dont perform and put up consistently, your out its that simple.

I tend to disagree ... Seems to me that the guy with the greatest skill has pretty good chances too. Do you really think that a driver who's not trained properly but yet has the fastest car, could reach for the trophy ? He just couldn't ... not even close.

Furthermore, I strongly believe that no caps regarding cpu/gpu frequency should be introduced. Using only retail hardware that have hit the stores already sounds nice to me, because F1 Overclocking Competition fans would be aware of what is being overclocked.

I have another concern ... Is there any perspective in creating even larger teams ? I do get that 2 membered teams is the way to go for now, but will that be discussed in the future ? There is huge potential on such League, I don't even want to talk about what's going to change if everything's goes as planned by you guys (The Overclocker). But really, if only two membered teams are going to compete (I'm not referring to Season 1 here, just thinking about the future of such a sport), then lots of guys will lose interest.

Hey Miah - sorry man.. didn't know you were taken off Team MSI and placed up for Team USA. I was just looking at the Rooster on the 1st post

Interesting that you would be pulled from the MSI Team.. you have great track records with their gear in these tpye of competitions.

If there is only 2 spots for Team USA.. its gong to be a tough one to fill. Soo many great benchers in the states.

retail/available hw rule is SERIOUSLY flawed, because it is easy to make any ES look like retail and like manuf cant cherry pick a retail sample anyway?
YOu need to get cpu manuf to seed EVERYONE in the comp the best of the best and we all go for it , THATS what its really about.
Each team gets limited amount of ES cpus with special ES CPUZ coding or something that must be shown in all screenshots, and if you burn them all up your done. F1 teams have a limited amount of engines they can use.

    1) Unfortunately, you 're right on that one Vince.

    2) The man's got a point Now that's something really intriguing, that would for sure bring a large proportion of the overclocking community onboard.

Wow, overclocking turning into a professional sport ... Like we didn't see that coming already.

    Hi Vince

The only problem I can see with this is if you have a non limit on CPU's then one guys can have one that does 5 Gig where another guys has a chips that does 5.7Gig, no matter how skilled you are or what talent you have MHz will always win with this sort of difference in MHz

Like F1 cars or any form of motor racing they all have a limit on CC, it is all then to do with setup and the driver to whom will win.

I have seen so many cases now of pure MHz winning at events, yes all the guys are very talented at what they do, but to make this a true best of the best then there has to be limits put on MHz just like motor sport, then the rest comes down to the setup and operator to get the best performance from there system.

This is not saying that someone could get more from there CPU from tweaks and settings, but it would be a good idea like you said to have the cream of the cream silicon that has all been batched the same rather than a mix bunch of CPU being sent out.

If you use the cpu limit thing, i think motherboard manuf. lose one point that could give them some advatange during competition (because their hw is able to run faster) and that could also help them with sales (because costumers love to see high speed capable parts). Am i right or...?
