It's the heat, you are running too hot guaranteed, just like me. With better cooling you would be able to lower the volts and up the clocks. With the stock Intel cooler I could not get the Core i7 940 past 3.4GHz to be rock solid stable. After upgrading to the CoolerMaster V8 I can do 3.99GHz rock solid stable, but not higher. I noticed too that a lot of people with better cooling are managing to lower volts and get higher overall clocks. Currently, I am settled on the settings I mentioned earlier as the balance between volts and clocks is the best. Need to put this under some serious water to go higher. Currently under Small FFTs the temps peak at 85C, under Large FFTs around 80C. Also, I reviewed the Intel technical specifications for Core i7 and they say that min and max voltages are 0.8V and 1.375V respectively.
