The spikes in temperature are probably due to uneven load rather than voltage spikes.

I have load-line disabled. Because I was worried about voltage spikes, LOL. Im getting these spikes with 2 differetnt psu's. I see these spikes in the 3.3v and 12v graph. I dont even know if I should trust this. The voltage readings on my p7n were all over the place too, but nothing like this with the vcore. Ive seen cpuz say 2.1v with this board on the vcore. That would have fried my chip right away, Look at the first pic I took of occt running, its crazy.

You'd perhaps be more sympathetic if you were an Q9450 owner
I've also experienced the same problems after trying and briefly using higher bioses than 803. Note that its only an 3.6 overclock, not more, hardly bleeding edge stressing components
I think this is the ideal place to share information on this subject.
After all once you set your system up, whatdaya going to do, fark with ram timings for ever more? this is a genuine issue (as witness by different users) and its not exactly work to read the thread - its nice to have new material relating to the board
the combined replacement cost of the cpu and board is only ~$500, so I wouldn't dismiss it as a petition for new hardware
personally I follow this thread to see if the problems have solutions
ie new bios that I can use with my CPU and fix for the restart on power down
Another point is Luci5r drove the overclocking of the q9450 on this board when the board was first released : work that enabled many (like me)to simply use the template to get up and going while new to the subject, surely that huge positive contribution books time to discuss a board/cpu problem
and what if the time truehigh has done results in cpu swaps, that is beneficial to the community whom have the cpu/board combination
*the worry here is that
1 we are stuck with 803 bios for ever more and
2 the same settings on 803 will stop working - eg the non shutdown problem, which personally just started happening this week on mine
I think its valid discussion, and I think if you had the same cpu you would too.
Q9450 is end of line but Q9550 is popular so there possibility of this becoming more common

what is the average fsb that I should expect on air with a dual core?
how about with a quad core?
how worse would the crossfire performance be compared to a x48 motherboard (like rampage formula) using 2 4850s on 1920*1200 res?
does the 16-phase on the p5q deluxe really help for a higher cpu overclock?

Why i can't find 1403 BIOS on any ASUS FTP!? One is just dead (but used to work) and other two only have old versions. What gives?

500FSB is doable on duallies, 450-480 for quads... I think you are more cpu speed limited to around 4-4.5 (wolfdale ) around 3.6-3.8Ghz for quads all depending on CPU, ambient temps and cooler used...
Crossfire performance on that resolution will not be much lower at that resolution... there have been some tests on the matter with very wicked results : some were a total rape others were just a matter of a few percentages
Regarding the phase question : it should be no, but the 16 phase will have an easier time to maintain it, surely with a quad... Also I have had several E boards and there something wrong with some of them : LLC and co leads to instability... I prefer the Dlx board all the way...

I placed an order for them today then decided to browse a little more and started reading some more the user reviews on Newegg, this time from lowest rating and I got shocked well enough to cancel the order and hold off until I do more research. Below is some of the stuff that I read.
Newegg - Asus P5Q-E - User Reviews
I updated my BIOS to 1306(latest bios as of 9/16/08). My computer took 37 seconds exactly from the time I hit the power button to until the BiOS screen pulled up, where you hit DEL to enter the BiOS. I then called Asus tech support. After waiting on hold for 45 minutes(yes, i timed it) the tech support helper guy told me I had to download a 450MB update for the Express Gate system that is included with this motherboard. Even this would be fine and the motherboard would have received a 4-star rating from me, but then it happened. I have 20mbit download with Verizon FiOS. Asus has a 56k modem that they're using to upload these updates to us on. The updates were downloading at 4KB/s from both China and Global. Continued in Other thoughts...BSOD stop errors on a regular basis. Difficult to install Windows XP because of stability issues. Setup crashes when trying to load to RAID volume which is a known issue that Asus cannot apparently resolve. Random freezing of OS regardless of BIOS version and memory type used. I cannot believe Asus let this model out into the retail market. This is the worst experience I've had with an Asus Mobo ever!ASUS technical support is nonexistant. If you have a choice between an ASUS board and any other board, get the other board.Even after days of work, this board was a nightmare. I have never had an ASUS product be this difficult or this poorly designed. I am truly upset by the quality of this board and have returned it to Newegg.Board had intermittent blue screen issues. Checked everything and after replacing the board with a ASUS Rampage Formula, I had no issues.Flashed up to 1306 BIOS and seemed to get better but then USB started to reset over and over, can't get into BIOS even with PS2 keyboard.i am using yorkfield 9450 at 3.0ghx oc'd but cant go more than 3.4 (stable). this chip can support up to 4.63 ghz.As has been noted previously, with Q9550 proc I had to flash to older 0803 bios (had 1201) to get it to work. I had random BSOD's whenever I tried to play a game or play a movie with 1201 BIOS. 0803 seems to have done the trickIt took me about 10 attempts to install Vista64 without locking up. Oh, and WHY do any utilities these days insist on seeing a 1.44MB floppy??? Finally got Vista installed...but was getting random lockups causing a hard reboot. Bios shipped was v1201. If it wasn't for the reviews here...I flashed bios 0803 and so far things seems stable. If it lockes up again...its RMA baby...no more Asus for me. This is my 2nd Asus mobo in about 5-6 years. The last one shipped with a dead coin cell battery, and wouldn't let me into the BIOS.I nearly RMA'd this mobo as I could not get it run consistently with my processor. It would crash every 30 minutes or whenever I would try to run a game or benchmark. Tested all my parts with another mobo and they were fine. I tried the latest BIOS (1306) and got no improvement. After doing some research, I rolled the BIOS back to version 0803. It works great now.Wouldn't run my DDR2-1000 G-Skill memory at 1000mhz without crashing. It would run with Crucial DDR2-1066@1066Mhz and the G-Skill ram worked in my other rig just fine. Seems there is compatibility issues with G-Skill and Asus. There is a lack of stable bios' for this mobo. Also I have trouble overclocking my processor but I think that is because of my memory. I bought an Artic Freezer 7 and it actually moves the side vent over a little because the area around the cpu is closely packed.BIOS needs an immeidate update. I can't get expressgate to work on mine for some reason, and on one boot the totally stock BIOS just dumped out and it had to recIver itself from the backup...wierdBios is a bit of an issue. One, you will need to update it in order for it to support all 8 gigs or so of ram. My recomendation is installing 1 gig of ram when you turn it on or install an OS, and then downloaded the latest BIOS, otherwise it wont even post. It also has an issue where it measures the CPU temperature wrong, the latest bios update fixes this as well.My zalman heat sink bearly fit.....but I got it in there!Space around the LGA 775 socket is too tight for many main-stream coolers.Newegg - Asus P5Q Deluxe - User ReviewsThrough my experiences with this mobo I've noticed that it struggles with higher fsb on higher mult (compared with other boards) I have exhausted all the bios voltages and settings to run anything higher the 9.5 x 425 stable. However, it is possible to run stable with a lower multiplier something higher then 4.1Ghz which means this is a great lower mult overclocker (also means the 9.5 mult I spent my money on got me nowhere higher then say a e8300 because I found the most stable for highest ghz to be 8.5 mult)
Anyone planning to purchase this mobo with a Yorkfield processor Q9xxx or above should seriously consider purchasing another non-ASUS motherboard. The main issue is the BIOS support. The default BIOS version (v1103) cause BSOD and will never pass Prime95. I had to DOWNGRADE to v0803 in order to not crash. Unfortunately, 0803 is not compatible with my GSKILL RAM that I purchased. So now I am using an older pair of 1GB DDR2 800 that I have. Just take a look at the ASUS forums for this mobo at all of the problems and lack of support. BEWARE!This is the biggest piece of garbage Ive ever bought. After years of AMD I decided to go back to Intel and Im sorry I did. I cannot anything on this motherboard to work. Ive reinstalled windows XP Pro more times then I can count. The on board sound is not recognized by its on driver disk and it will not work with my soundblaster audigy card. The driver disk that came with the board just hangs when trying to install all the drivers. Asus tech support is non existent. Tried their live chat only to get a message that its unavailable after waiting 20 minutes. Tried calling them and I was told to leave my name and hopefully someone would call me back. When I try to install my video card drivers the systems just hangs. I have a $1000 paper weight at this point. Save your money and headaches. STAY AWAY FROM ASUS.-AUTO voltage settings over volt components to dangerous levels.
- Most manual voltage settings overvolt to a significant degree.
- Massive CPU vdroop unless LLC is enabled.
- HORRIBLE tRD (aka Performance Level) options, especially with the 1:1 ratio.
- Very fragile chipset. Cannot tolerate settings that are safe according to the boards BIOS and manual.
- Push-pins used to secure NB cooler.
- Metal EPU plate blocks air flow to SB.
Other Thoughts: I was initialy very optimistic about this board, and my early testing supported such sentiments. However the board rapidly began demonstrating erratic behavior and instabilities that I eventually traced to the chipset.
I was using reasonable voltages (far less than what the AUTO stetting would have set) and very good cooling, yet withing 36 hours I could barely boot the board due to the chipset wearing out.
Perhaps my example was a dud, but the hassle it gave me was second to none. No other board I've used, and I have used a lot of very finiky boards, has managed to be be such an annoyance in such a short amount of time.So I am on my second board since the first one just kept crashing on me… And even on this one I see no improvements what so ever over my old DFI P35… As a matter of fact I used to run my e8400 @ 4400 and now I can’t get this sucker stable at anything over 3800!!! I use a Prometeia to keep it cool, but since you have all them connectors near the cpu socket area it makes quite challenging to do it.Could not get Windows XP to install. Tried three different XP disks - two different sets of memory - two different CD ROMS - two different hard drives. Each time the install would fail. Most of the time when trying to copy files from the CD to the hard drive. All drives were SATA. Other seem to be having this problem.I've been battling with this board for sometime now. First, I had to upgrade my video card from a 8600gt to a ati 4850 in order to have video. There is limited to no PCI-E 1.1 support. Check around the net, other have had issues. RAM issues galore, tread careful on what brand of memory you have. The QVL list on ASUS' site doesn't help.Setup was horrible, even after updating BIOS. The mobo has serious issues trying to boot with some USB devices plugged in. For me, it was my UPS battery. For others, it has been iPod or other USB mass storage. BIOS would freeze while initializing USB controllers during boot-up.Over the years of building systems from 486DX33 up until now I have been growing weary of dealing with foreign motherboard manufacturers and my experience with the hardware made by Asus has luckily been good but I know that it can become like dental work when it comes to customer service, modem like 4KB/s download speeds from their Global and Chinese web sites, bad releases of crappy PC Probe software, and weird BIOS updates.Ai doesnt have the best cutomer service. i waited on the phone for about 15 minutes only for someone to say that the lines were to busy to leave ur name a number and we'll get back to u. ai suite stopped working after bios update 1306 now i cant use those cool features. :-(
After going through problems with this current DFI motherboard that was supposed to be a king for overclockers only to get 0.3GHz 3D stable OC from 2.2 to 2.5GHz on server class AMD Opteron and then months later finding out about horrible performance and interference between the Silicon Image 3114 PCI based RAID and the Sound Blaster X-Fi I am all most out of patience of dealing with sub-par designs and support that have been getting worse and worse over the years. Not to mention all the unstable memory dying issues like the Crucial Ballistix fiasco from a year or two ago.
Now I'm looking towards upgrading my system to something better and it looks like the Q9400 with P45 and DDR2 is the price & performance answer that will lead to a 3x increase in performance and decrease in x264 encoding times by 3x.
However after reading the reviews left on Newegg, while most being written by noobs, they do leave me with a sense that there are some serious problems with the Asus PQ5-E and Deluxe versions.
So, I'm writing to you all that have these motherboards and went through the problems asking what should I expect from this type of an upgrade?

In my honest opinion stay away from the E version... I had several boards with Loadline calibration not working, which resulted in BSOD, not able to get into windows, random reboots at idle etc... also 2 of them had issues to clock over 450FSB... The Dlx's here run just fine with the Qx9650, Q6600 and Wolfdale CPU's
If the Q9400 is like the 9450 run the Dlx board with bios 0803... Though I'm not aware if the Q9400 also has issues that might be related to the CPU enhancement option of the bios... Depending on ya OC maybe the Q6600 is still a good option (if ya limit yaself to 34-3.6Ghz OC's) as it has more cache onboard (8mb vs 6mb), cheaper, but maybe not the instruction set you want to have... in any case if you OC them quads opt for a good cooler like the Thermalright Ultra 120 or eXtreme models...
For the rams I ran these gskill/mushkin kits from day one I had the board... no compatability issues at all , they run nicely at 1066 or 1081mhz according the selected FSB
Mushkin Redline PC8000 4GB
Gskill PC8000PQ 4GB kit
Good luck

Hi guys,
Going to order this board for next week with a SATA HD and DVD drive.e.g there will be no PATA \ IDE in this system I will build. I also don't have a floppy drive.
I'm wondering about installing Windows XP SP2 will cause me problems because there are no SATA drivers on the disc? Or is there?
I've read various different things from people .. some say you don't need the drivers and it will install fine. Some people say just select IDE as your hard drive and it will install, some say they are on a SP2 disc, etc. etc.
I'm confused and only ever built PATA | IDE systems.
Can anyone help me \ confirm if I will or won't run into problems, and if so how to overcome them.
Thanks, Danny.

Thanks Mac, appreciate your post. I've reiterated this ample times before, this matter is of pertinent importance. I can't possibly fathom a reason not to, quote, "raise hell", unquote, about this matter in THIS very thread ... despite resistance from any. Each & every single Motherboard "discussion" thread created here at XS follows each & every problem/difficulty encountered with said Motherboard. Yesterday it began to appear that mine & true's voices were getting lost in the shuffle, and somewhat being dampened. I'm glad there are other people coming out in support.
I must also commend JakFrost very graciously for his time & effort digging all those details. The problem with this board, Q9450 & the BIOS>0803, which basically points to the "CPU Margin Enhancement" setting - is inevitable, and cannot be ignored.
Most of us running kosher @ 0803 ... but above that, one by one the bricks are falling. Numbers are strengthening. True ... I'm with you all over. If it takes calling ASUS everyday, I will. This has to be answered, they cannot ignore this. I personally believe that both the ASUS P5Q Deluxe is an Excellent Motherboard, and the Q9450 is an AWESOME Chip ... there has to be a solution.
Cheers.

It should be noted its not just Quads that get the problems you guys have. When using a BIOS with CPU M-E, even my dualcore got affected. The system stopped shutting down properly (just hung on "Windows is shutting down"), and my system started to become unstable even with stock settings. Back with BIOS 703m, all is well again. Testing out a modded 901m atm.

A quirk with the modded 704 bios for the Deluxe is that occasionally the board won't let the RAM run at DDR2-1000 or more. Seems to happen after the machine is off for a while. Clearing the CMOS doesn't help. The fix seems to be to let the machie boot fully with the RAM below DDR2-1000, then restart. After that they'll OC normally.
