Collective Q9450 and P5Q series issue thread -- SOLVED BY 1406 BIOS

LATEST 1406 BIOS SOLVED ALL TILL KNOW ALL KNOWN ISSUES WITH Q9450 OR OTHER YORK CPU'S -- IF YOU STILL ENCOUNTER PROBS PLZ USE A PM MESSAGE -- NEW BIOSSES ARE ALREADY IN THE WORKS

K After reading numerous posts of users with this hardware combination, I think it will be more easier to find users with the same issue(s) if we have one collective thread on the matter... users with other 45nm quads also can pop in... This is easier for the Asus tech to dig in...

Plz fill in the following info and vote in the poll plz

I upgraded to 1306 with the Asus utility(default clocks on everything) and then reapplied the settings from my old 0803 bios and everything works. Fixed a couple of major problems that i had with my 4870x2.
I am in a business trip right now so i am not able to reach my pc but as far as i remember these are my settings. I think the bios is 1306, its the last bios that the Asus software found for my board.

I would also like to invite everyone using a Q9450 w/ P5Q Deluxe and having issues using any BIOS > 0803 (The 'CPU Margin Enhancement' setting as we've come to understand), to please come in this thread & make a post. As Leeg advised me, ASUS Techs will be looking into this thread to find out the amount of people having problems, and the nature of the problems.

    P5Q made in : Taiwan
    daily OC used : 3.8Ghz

    Drivers from Cd : NO

    Issue encountered :
Cannot boot into Vista using BIOS > 0803. Any BIOS > 0803 results in Freezes, BSOD's.
*NOTE: Only at BIOS 0803 the system boots in & works as normal. This issue started over a period of time - not immediately upon flashing to BIOS > 0803.

counteracts taken : eg bios reflash, hardware swap, cmoss reset, format, other drivers, other OS,...[/QUOTE]
Everything you can possibly think of. Formatted hard drive, re-installed Operating System, swapped hard drives, CMOS reset, bios flashed/re-flashed, all hardware removed & reconfigured.

    Thanks.

Board will boot better after flashing second bios(deluxe board) to 803(was 602, or something I cannot recall exactly), but will still not boot QX9650 C0 L739A cpu with multi higher than default. You can go into bios, change multi, boot once, then CMOS MSUT be cleared in order to boot again.

No BSODs or software problems, but P95 failed after 3 - 5 minutes on at least 1 CPU. Ran P95 multiple times, always failed. Switched CPU Margin Enhancement from Optimized to Performance and P95 worked perfectly. [NOTE: Edited, got them reversed earlier. My mistake]

Haven't tried to OC yet, perhaps will get started this week-end.

    P5Q ... P5Q Deluxe made in Taiwan
    daily OC used : 3.6 Q9450
    Voltage settings used : 1.34375

    CPU Voltage:
CPU GTL Voltage Reference (0/2): 0.635

    CPU PLL Voltage: 1.54
    FSB Termination Voltage: 1.34
    DRAM Voltage: 2.02
    NB Voltage: 1.3

    CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
    PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled
    CPU Clock Skew : Auto
    NB Clock Skew : Auto

    Operating System used : Vista x64 SP1

RAID : No, dual drive but non raid

Drivers from Cd : Yes, but updated ALL drivers from Asus website to current releases

    Issue encountered :

I am effectively unable to use any bios higher than 803, and now even with bios 803 the system does not power off from vista - it tries to reboot - this lack of power off started occuring recently. This occured without changing anything in either bios nor software which has me worried about cpu longevity.

Using higher bioses than 803 results in non stable overclock: I cannot run 3.6 stable in prime95 where with 803 and the same bios settings it will run for 8 hours each on small, large and blend tested one after each other.

Also, on bioses higher than 803, the cpu will not speedstep, its locked on 3.6 for the same bios settings.

I got scared enough from briefly using higher bioses (and reading other users problems) to revert to 803, and I was stable for a time but now I am worried as the system will not shutdown anymore from vista.

I was unable to reload vista on higher bioses (see below)

    counteracts taken :

System would attempt bios recovery to "delivery bios". I have systematically tried everything suggested in these threads.

The process which works for me (in a recovery from lock up on higher than 803 bios) is to use the reset jumper, and then also remove the cmos battery for a time, then reflash to 803 then manually re-enter my settings from my template.

I had a hell of a time trying to reload vista on higher bioses. It would only work successfully on 803 and with IDE mode for the install. Both intel RAID and Drive expert Raid failed on me after a short time (I am not sure if the RAID/drive expert issue is directly related to this issue as I got fed up enough not to troubleshoot it properly, but I'm commenting on it anyway for information)

I have reformatted a few times after trying higher bioses, which I'm basically sick of doing this and crave a stable system. 803 was stable but the restart on shutdown error has just started.

My cpu processor serial number is:

    SLAWR MALAY
    2.66 GHZ/12M/1333/05A
    L8038553

The rest of my hardware is in my signature below.

sf rich is your board also from Taiwan? Until now the common thing is that the boards with problems(3 so far) are from Taiwan.

    My setup consists of:
    e8400
Asus P5Q pro (with latest Bios)
    4 x 1GB crucial ballistix PC2-6400
    2 x 250 SATA WD2500AAKS

so far, here is what I've tried:

    a) Removed 2 x 1 GB sticks (from DIMM2 and DIMM4 slots).
    b) Forced Bios Timings to memory 4-4-4-12 (as oem says) and 2.0 Vdimm
    c) tried a different install disk of Vista x64, and even 32-bit
    versions
    d) removed all drives except one, and tried each one, one by one.
    e) replaced all Sata cables, disconnected USB and other non-essential perihperals.
    f) Used different RAM: Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400

in all cases, the same issue: it would hang up and reboot after copying installation files (right when 1st graphical screen starts up).

to double check: I installed XP pro SP3, and it worked fine with XP

Issue encountered : 803 is very stable, but runs memory at Compatability 06 (later versions run at Compatability 05, but setting this on BIOS 803 causes a hard lock and CMOS needs clearing).

A BIOS later than 803 is very unstable, and fails Prime95 and IntelBurnTest anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Increasing NB voltage to 1.52 and DRAM voltage to 2.36 helps a lot, but the system is still unstable, and applications crash, exit, etc. Anything later than 803 is basically unusable, although I think the improved memory support runs my Geil RAM slightly faster.

1402 yeilded me 475*8, where 0803 maxed out at 450*8. I still can't get to 500FSB on my Q9450, but my board does 520FSB on my E7200. oh well, I'll take the extra 200MHz oc.

1406 is running fine here with my Q9400. I was not having Some of the problems that others encountered tho. No boot problems or shutdowns tho, of which Prime95 would occasionally lock up my system with previous bios, that is gone.

All results by different users seem to be indicating 1406 to be a better BIOS.

@ Leeg ... is it possible to add 1406 to the Poll above?

1406 works for me where anything over 803 was very unstable and flaky.

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

y, i agree, but i want more mhz so i have to put more voltage. i figure if/when it dies, i'll upgrade to a Q9650. by then hopefully people are selling used ones for $200 that do 4.2ghz under 1.35v.

P5Q Dlx (type) made in ??? (how do I tell?) (Taiwain or China)
    daily OC used : stock
Voltage settings used : vdimm 2.1, everything else stock

    CPU Voltage:
CPU GTL Voltage Reference (0/2): stock
CPU GTL Voltage Reference (1/3): stock
    CPU PLL Voltage: stock
    FSB Termination Voltage: stock
    DRAM Voltage: 2.1
    NB Voltage: stock
    NB GTL Reference: stock
    SBridge Voltage: stock
    PCIE SATA Voltage: stock

    Load Line Calibration:
    CPU Spread Spectrum: stock
    PCIE Spread Spectrum: stock
    CPU Clock Skew : stock
    NB Clock Skew : stock
if bios later than 0803 : which setting for CPU enhancement... : optimized and performance

Operating System used : Vista Ultimate x64

    RAID : No

Drivers from Cd : can't remember

Issue encountered : system will not shutdown, only restarts; random BSODs

counteracts taken : flashed BIOS to 1406, changed CPU enhancement to Peroformance from Optimized; reinstallation of OS, different GPUs

I'm tired of the glitchiness of this board. Can't even run stock settings? What a POS!! Is this a problem on the Maximus II? Or any other known boards?

Did you check your memory? also this board overvolts the Ram (mine with 0.08), do your rams need 2.2 volt to be stable ? Which rams are we talking about ? I would do a reflash and then pop the battery for an hour or so... test them one at a time... did you try a reinstall ? put the dimms in the other slots, etc...
