    Temps

    IDLE Temp @ FAN Fixed 45% = 37º

    (Ambient Temp = 23&#186

    LOAD Temp @ FAN fixed 45% = 56º

( AMDGpuTool reading temps while running Crysis )

    21:16:03, ASIC Temperature = 37.5ºc -- Mem Clock(MHz) = 900.00 -- Core Clock (MHz) = 500.00 (2D)

    21:31:21, ASIC Temperature = 50.5ºc -- Mem Clock (MHz) = 900.00 -- Core Clock (MHz) = 750.00 (3D)

    Minimum temperature: 37º C
    Maximum temperature: 56.5º C
    Average temperature: 51.5º C

However With fan speed = 45% is already noisy ...... 35% Seems OK !

    LOAD Temp @ FAN fixed 40% = 58º (Atitool 3D)

    (Ambient Temp = ~24&#186

    IDLE Temp @ FAN Fixed 35% = 42º

    (ambient temp = ~24&#186

Of course a good case and airflow is also fundamental , i tested the card with Antec nine hundred case :

    2x 120mm fan front
    1x 120mm back
    1x 200mm fan top

Great card for the price and nice GRID FPS, hope overclocking follows soon.

Is it really that cool for simply raising fan speed to only 45%? Hard to imagine, not typical temperature/speed for ATI cards.

yep , raising fan speed the temps are very good , problem with Automatic fan speed and temps is because auto fan speed = ~20%

however with fan speed = 45% already noisy .... (35% seems OK)

    with Fan speed = 35% :

    Idle temp = ~42º (ambient temp = 24&#186

of course a good case and airflow is fundamental , im testing the card with Antec nine hundred (2x 120mm fans front, 1x 120mm back and 1x200mm top fan )

btw: saw this cooler today , good price and seems like is compatible with Hd4000

Hey, my first post on XtremeSystems forums .

Thank you mascaras for the reviews. This is exactly what i was looking for as i intend to by me a new system with approximately the same specs as in this reviews ( E8400, HD4870, 4GB ram, Vista 64 with a Asus P5Q-E mobo)

And this HL2 Ep.2 review comes in handy as i am Team Fortress 2 "addict" and they are both build on the same Source engine.

One question: my lcd is a LG 19" wide with a maximum resolution of 1440x900 and i won' change it with a bigger one any time soon. As your test are done at 1680x1050, im wondering how much FPS gain can i have for my smaller resolution. Something between 5-10? ( im not asking to do test at 1440x900, just an opinion )

How would you say it stacks against an 8800GTS 512 or similar in terms of performance? Can't really find any hard numbers on that... Might not have looked enough of course

its WAY better than a 8800GTS 512mb , believe me

    HD4850 >>> 9800GTX

    HD4870 >> Little Behind GTX280

the HD4870 is perfect price/performance , only "bad" thing is the FAN used (noisy above 30%)

    best regards
