NVIDIA GT200 now known as GeForce GTX 280/260?

From GT200 will GeForce GTX 280/260
15th May 2008 The Namenswirrwar of recent months even as Nvidia seems to have disrupted, so that for the GT200 seems to be a completely new naming scheme in the day sets. The serious Taiwanese side will HKEPC from several sources, that the new cards as a family "GeForce GTX 200" to be published.

The term "Nvidia GeForce GTX 280" remains the fastest option reserved for the former variant of a planned 9900 GT (S) becomes the 260th GeForce GTX. To distinguish the models now in its numbering, although the same family. This will be less confusing for customers, after last through the various shortcuts and countless renaming a transit vision in the current Nvidia graphics cards almost exclusively for experts was possible. What exactly is tuned, however, and whether the rumour confirmed to be in the 25th Week to be clarified when it comes to showdown of the new graphics card from Nvidia against the Radeon 4000 series from AMD. According to HKEPC is Nvidia on 18. June introduce its new models, while AMD's launch plan probably to 18. June have preferred.
    german source: http://www.computerbase.de/news/hard...e_gtx_280_260/
    translated: http://translate.google.de/translate...hl=de&ie=UTF-8

seems like the original news on hkpc was pulled out as i can't find it anywhere on their site.

so the GT becomes GeForce GTX 260 and the highend part GTX 280.

The last sentence was a little hard to read but if what I got from it is true that the cards will be out by June 18 I will be able to step up in time! Yay!

Awesome. The names remind me of the Nissan/Datsun 260/280Z, great cars of their time.

I cant wait to see performance of these cards.

    btw:

Geforce GTX 280 to launch on June 18th

    So will Geforce GTX 260

We've found out what looks to be the launch date for GT200 cards. We are happy to report that both GT200 cards are single chip cards, something that we've suggested back in January.

The launch should take place on the 18th of June, just in the middle of week 25, and at current schedule that is two days after ATI's RV770 launch.

The name Geforce GTX 280 looks a bit odd, but I am sure that we will get used to it. The only other alternative was to use Geforce 9900 cliché but we believe that GT200 deserves better name. As its been suggested at many occasions GT200 chip will have significantly more Shader units and the most frequent number that we heard was 240. We still work on getting the confirmation of this bold spec.

Nvidia just ran out of numbers and it’s starting all over again. It's like reseting the odometer, more or less.

I don't see that being too confusing, and actually this naming scheme will make things a lot less confusing...

If they give each level of card it's own naming, i.e. GTX for the high end, GT for the mid end, and GS for the low-end then the customer can merely compare the number on it with it's corresponding letter and know what they're getting. In otherwords, no more idiot buying the 9400GS to replace their 8800GTX because it's a higher numbered GeForce.

I see this as a good thing, as long as they make sure to point out to all customers what each name means.

Ultra always comes later down the road after they have couped all the money on the 'slower cards'. They will probably stock pile all the well binned chips in the meantime to make into the Ultra when that time comes around.

That logic still wouldnt work though

Say nvidia have their GTX 260, GTX 280 and GT 260 and GT 280, GS 260 and GS 280 the next gen comes someone could still buy a GT 360 or GS 360 which would be slower than a GTX 280 but has a higher number, therefore making it just as confusing for the unknowing consumer.

They could do the next gen as a GTX 261 and GTX 281 but that would make marketing very difficult indeed having such a stupid name.

People are going to notice the higher number more than the letters.

Geforce GTX 280 to launch on June 18th
    supposedly.
    1 month from now

    brace your wallet

280 vs 260 perf much diffrent? let's see some numbers.

...and i thought 770pro was launching before 770xt? but that could be wrong.

8800gtx and 8800gts 640MB were both launched simultaneously in late '06.

It should be GT-1, later on GT-2, then 3 4 5 6... so much easier to organize them :P Add in the GT/GTX for performance differences.

All systems sold. Will be back after Sandy Bridge!

i cant find any pics of a monkey-chicken; it is a yet to be hybrid.
i can buy a chicken (dead OR alive); the monkey is a bit more difficult.

a chicken is a nice investment; it's cheap to feed (scraps) and lays nice edible eggs.

    Scubar,
I don't see how this could be more confusing than the naming method nV uses currently.
And btw, I bet there's just as many people who think HD3450 is faster than HD2900XT...
You were not supposed to see this.

they should use the ABC naming scheme.
    i.e.
    1a - lowend
    1b - midrange
    1c - omgubarprice

then when a new gen is out just goto

    2a
    2b
    2c

    repeat over and over

Maybe manufactures should put on the box what the scale is for the cards. If the box says GS=low, GT mid and GTX high then the consumer will have an idea what they are getting. Maybe they can also drop all the XXX FTW WTF BBQ things that are added after the suffix
