The benchmarks I posted show that a PCI-E x8 card couldn't go over 400MB/s sustained read because the bottleneck was the IOP333 CPU. In that case the CPU was the bottleneck, and soon enough the CPU's on today's RAID cards will bottleneck the array. The PCI-E x8 interface can theoretically handle 2GB/s, Serra was quite right in saying that "The limit is the processor"
