See where the pins end inside the PCI-E slot?...the rest of the slot is solid plastic, a notch is cut out from underneath this section to allow the the 1394 controller chip to be placed, thus saving space on the PCB...it's actually a VERY smart idea!
still would've prefered them to have had a standard 8x length slot so that IC gets more breating room. they could still add on the latch part at the end with relative ease as well.
