Exactly what my point has been.

The 9600GT is a new rev of the G92 core with fewer shaders, and some optimizations. It performs extremely close to the 8800GT even though the clocks and number of shaders would suggest otherwise.

The 9800GTX will use a new rev of the G92 core, the G92-420.

Since the G94 core supports newer openGL version than the original G92 core, and the new G92 core now supports the newer openGL standards, it is pretty safe to say the new G92 rev also received these shader optimizations.

but if the ROPS are the bottlenecks for the architecture i think nvidia has a problem, but i agree with the post above me

Seems to me that Jetway thinks its 8800gt supports opengl2.1, and if its the same core, why wouldnt it.

    They really have a 2gb 8800gt?

    What's New in OpenGL 2.1

OpenGL version 2.1, released on August 2, 2006, is the seventh revision since the original version 1.0. Despite incrementing the major version number (to indicate support for high-level programmable shaders), version 2.1 is upward compatible with earlier versions, meaning that any program that runs with a 2.0, 1.5, 1.4, 1.3, 1.2, 1.1, or 1.0 GL implementation will also run unchanged with a 2.1 GL implementation.

OpenGL 2.1 adds backwards compatible enhancements to OpenGL's advanced programmable pipeline including: Pixel Buffer Objects for fast texture and pixel copies between frame buffer and buffer objects in GPU memory; texture images specified in standard sRGB color space for enhanced application color management flexibility; and numerous additions to increase the flexibility of shader programming including non-square matrix support, support for arrays as first-class objects, a fragment position query in shaders using Point Sprites and an invariant attribute for variables to enhance shader code reliability.

no where, but its still well worth it as a $300 card in all honesty. I don't think there is one out there that cannot do at least +630/+1500 shader. The newer GTX will hardly be an ungrade unless the shader 'enhancements' are nearly as good as some hope.

Maybe the 8800GTS 512 can be flashed to 9800GTX and thereby support Tri-SLI?

8800GTS has 1 SLI connector, therefore it's not doable

Sadly that won't happen till AMD gets its stuff together and release a real high end card.

Groan. The heading for this write up needed in parenthesis "(because it's just rehashed old-tech)" at the end of the title.

These new cards are not exciting unless you're running a 4 year old VC in your box.

I just sold my 8800GTX a few weeks ago on Ebay and fetched $380 for it so I can't see where you will find one for less than $300 anywhere.

Actually, it would make sense...overclock a stock 8800GTS 512MB to the rumored GTX clocks and I am sure you would get an increase of 38W.

    Of course it's not a power-hungry monster. It's just another G92.

In fact, it's the fifth graphics card from nVidia with a G92, although all of the cards have different names (8800GT, 8800GTS 512, 8800GS, 9800GX2, 9800GTX).

The 38W increase makes sense, considering the clock increase.

We have one, can't get any GTS's though (I wonder where all the G92 cores are going)! I'll bench it against GTS SLi on a 750i with a Q6700@3.2GHz and 2GB if I get the chance on Monday.

Do the 174.20 drivers support GX2?

Yup up the juice on the 8800GTS and surely you'll reach what is suppositly the 9800GTX.

Heck my 8800GT is doing great and was looking forward to an upgrade but with all said now it doesn't look promising with whats coming out currently. So with that said I'll enjoy my recently adjusted bios volt mod to 1.1V and coast at my decent 783/1998/999 clocks.

The system I have in mind has GTS-SLi so in theory if these are OC'd the equivalent clocks as the GX2 it will be a match.

Oops wrong thread, I thought this was a GX2 thread

Exactly right thinking, and this is exactly why it's not possible. Looking at those graphs, I figure the rest of the system is consuming ~70W at load considering the 3870's TDP is ~105W. This means the 9800GTX is consuming somewhere around 160W (announced tdp is 168w), or roughly a 20% increase over the gts 512MB, for measly clock upgrades (this is not to say faster ram is important, but it's not a big factor in TDP). Since we know a card cannot be greater than 300W because of standards, 9800gx2 = epic fail.

At this rate a GX2 would be maxed out at ~670c. I don't doubt MSI's 660/2400mhz GX2 is right on the cupst of 300W.

While not a bigger bottleneck than memory bandwidth (that is thankfully getting an upgrade), the lowering of clocks causes a already low fill rate to go lower and the efficiency of crossfire with the higher core rate allows ATi to make up some texture deficiencies.

These high-clocked G92's do not look good at all, and explain why the 9800gx2 isn't going to be worth $600...unless somehow that faster memory makes a huge-ass difference.

For the guy that seemed misinformed:

    3870 TDP = 105W
3870x2 TDP = 190W Even though it is clocked higher, the arch doesn't eat a lot of power in scaling, and the single pcb closes the 2x gap by eliminating redundancy.

While on paper the 9800gx2 looks good, the architecture just isn't that efficient at these speeds, specs, and price. Same with the 9800gtx ($400) because of the power consumption and inefficiency. 9600gt/sli ftw. 8800gt ftw. Soon-to-be-coming $400 3870x2 ftw.

The 9800GTX will probably win Crysis, and the they will probably compete tooth and nail on the rest, although I expect the 3870x2 to come out on top...minus

Look at the power consumption. It has risen by 40 watts.

You don't get increase like that unless there is more going on with the core.

The 9800GTX will be more than a simple 8800GTS with faster clocks and tri-sli capability.

    Mark my words.

expect 20% or so increase over the GTS.
Everyone will get pwned for talking all the smack that they've been on about this card. Then there will be an uprising because people pulled the trigger on an 8800GT/GTS and they're psst this card is so much better.

it would be dumb not to wait for some in-game benches before deciding that, so it would be their own fault IMO

Well, it is not exactly frugal either.

    GeForce 9800 GTX Close-Up Pictures

There are not many details on this unfortunately, but WE.PCINLIFE seems to have acquired a number of close-up images of NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce 9800 GTX, which will be the company’s first high-end single GPU 9 series graphics card. There are 18 pictures in all, with some of the better shots shown below.

I don't think too many people bought into the PR that tried to play down the performance expectations of this card. Well, at least I never!
