Just purchased a new CPU, motherboard and ram from my local Microcenter that had a deal going on. First got an Asus P5K vanilla board that worked great for about 5 days before it started throwing up windows errors and eventually got to a no post state... Never came back from that, so the next day I went back to Microcenter and exchanged for the IP35 Pro, I have much higher hopes for this board. (Maybe at least a year or two...)
Anyways, I've done lots of overclocking on the AMD side of things, but I haven't had an Intel to overclock since the Celeron 300A days.
I'm wondering what people's experiences have been with the 16 beta bios and the E8400s on the IP35 Pro? I am currently running the 14 BIOS and even though the bios reports CPU temps wrong, other applications are able to report it correctly.
I am going for a mild 4ghz overclock with this CPU and it seems to take a bit of voltage to get it there. Setting 1.5250 in the BIOS gives me a 1.44 at idle in windows, 1.40 under full load. Is the beta 16 bios any better at attaining stability while overclocking the 45nm cpus? Also, can I be sure the voltages I am seeing currently are accurate on the VCore, anyone compared between the 14 and 16B03 / 16B04 bioses?
I am just a little hesitant to flash the latest bios because of a few problems I've heard here and there with regards to memory compatibility and the memory I've got is NOT good overclocking memory. Bought it because for $75 at a store 4GB is tough to ignore, and besides I just want 4ghz and leave it at that.
I have a few questions on voltages, was wondering what the ideal voltages would be for this E8400 with a FSB of 446? I currently have the following voltages:
VCore = 1.5250 bios ~1.45 idle - 1.41 load
MCH = 1.25 bios ~ 1.26-1.27 idle/load
CPU VTT = 1.23 bios ~ 1.25 idle/load
ICH = 1.12 bios ~ 1.14 idle/load
ICHIO = 1.50 bios ~ 1.53 idle/load
CPU GTLREF 0&2 = 59%
CPU GTLREF 1&3 = 60%
DDR2 REF = +2%
DDR2 = 2.100 ~ 2.10 load/idle
I was wondering what CPU GTLREF is ideal for this CPU and the IP35 Pro? I can get my CPU stable (Orthos blend for 8+ hours) by giving it more voltage, but right now CPU-Z is reporting 1.45 when idle, and 1.41 under load. If under load the cpu starts getting into the 1.40 range orthos will fail.
When I raise the CPU VTT voltage it seems to actually drop .01 V on the VCore, so I have stuck with 1.23. Not sure why that is, but perhaps someone can shed some light on that.
First post here so go easy on me, I'm not a noob to this at all, just refreshing on the Intel side of things. Thanks in advance for any help!
Edited to add:
Also figured I'd throw in my VID: 1.0375
