spending 3000 dollars on a pair of chips that will have zero resale value and will be outclassed by nehalem in just a year or so seems like a wise decision.

nonetheless, impressive.

That is the world we live in so get used to it.
Gone are the days of having the "top" machine for 2-3 years while the companies rolled out the next lineup.
Today you get a year maybe, and this is the price you pay if you want to be at the top.
There are always cheaper,lesser machinery available but if you think that way of what is coming you will never get the best as you'll be too busy thinking of what will be coming out..
Is there an answer? Yes, your attitude, desires and financial abilty dictate what you do.
For me it's buy the best, then skip a generatrion, then buy the best again.
Always at or near the top and in the interim year I've still got a great system.
