The mobo will still be warped but pushed down at the mounting screws so the mobo will take on some sort of "waved" shape.
You don't want the mobo to take such strain if a backplate can help prevent that, do you?
Using a backplate sets my mind at ease, just boltin a nut down to the motherboard with a washer in between fixes the threads, so that ain't a problem.
