I don't agree, motherboards will bend/warp when (over)tightening a waterblock, and that may cause motherboard failures.
Now a backplate cost me 4,95 euros here in the Netherlands, that includes shipping lol... and for that lousy amount of money I guarantee that my motherboard doesn't die when I overtight my waterblock a bit... better safe than sorry, if I want to kill it I can always do that later

If microchanneling really is the bee's knees of cooling, why hasn't it been implemented before? (Other than IBM number-crunchers)
Is it just the price/time needed to mill it, or are there other reasons?

What I absolutely don't get is that if the blocks are torqued down after the motherboard is secured to the motherboard tray, then how is the motherboard going to warp ? It seems as though a lot of people like to install their blocks and torque them down before installing the motherboard on the mobo tray. Perhaps its to take photos and show everyone how pretty they are.
There's the issue of how to torque down the block when the bolts are on the underside.. but that's open to individual creativity. Look at Jedda's machine.. he's able to get to the bottom of the motherboard even after its mounted... how? he cut strategic holes in his mobo tray... I would imagine similar holes can be created for the mosfet blocks as well... so... are backplates still absolutely necessary ? All that's needed is some good 'ol stratetergery.

My personal experience is that my motherboard does bow if a backplate is not used. It just makes sense to me to support the backside of the motherboard since the waterblock is being tightened down so far for maximum contact pressure. JMO

The mobo will still be warped but pushed down at the mounting screws so the mobo will take on some sort of "waved" shape.
You don't want the mobo to take such strain if a backplate can help prevent that, do you?
Using a backplate sets my mind at ease, just boltin a nut down to the motherboard with a washer in between fixes the threads, so that ain't a problem.

I guess I'm missing something... here is my test rig, which isnt even bolted to a mobo tray, it just lays on rubber grommets that go through the screw holes of the mobo... and I mount the blocks on this board with ~55lbs of pressure.
