Intel CPU's have OC black box

    Intel knows if you overclocked

A few big retailers and etailers have confirmed that Intel actually can check if you overclocked your CPU. When you burn your CPU Intel asks its retailers and etailers to return the CPU's back and in three to five weeks Intel gets back the answer whether the end customer gets a new chip or not.

If Intel figurate out that you load a CPU with too high frequency or to high voltage it might deny the RMA. This is a very unfair way of doing the business as the companies does not oppose to overclocking at least not officially.

Yes, we are saying that if you overclock your CPU and fry it at very high frequency that there is a big chance that Intel will deny your RMA.

Retailers and etailers said that they are not sure in Intel methods of judging who gets the new CPU but they said that Intel gets back to them if you overclocked too much and simply refuse to RMA of the part. This is more than disturbing news to all of the overclockers.

If you are one of these customers who didn’t get its RMA'd CPUs because of overclocking please let us know.

Yes it is true, i saw one year ago "similar black box" in AMD factory in Dresden. It 100% identified how much you are to overclock the chip before it is burned.

I wonder where it's stored on the chip and if the value can be changed.

I always hold to if you overclock it and burn it, your fault, don't RMA it.

this week i read that this will also be featured in the K10 CPUs.
dunno if i understood it right but i think that with K10 if u overclock the pll programming gets changed wich AMD can check.

If that means refused RMAs due to people overclocking then good, I hope so. CPU mfrs shouldn't pay for what the customer breaks - unless it broke due to mfr defect that caused it to fail in normal use.

Agreed, and IMO the RMA SHOULD be denied. The warranty on a retail CPU is only with the stock cooler at stock clocks, anything else you take the risk into your own hands.

If you're gonna burn your ship, you just need to make sure you burn the blackbox aswell

AMD will also know if you have overclocked with Barcelona, because change the corespeed will change something in the ppl code.
But i didn't know Intel CPU's had a black box , but i lapped my connie anyway

i completely agree but some people dont think like that.

i know people that volt mod their grafix card, kill the card and then remove the volt mod and RMA it.

Good for them. I'm glad. Sick and tired of reading threads about noobs killing their CPU's since they don't know what the heck they are doing. And then of course, they have the right mind to ask if they should RMA it.... They know the risks when overclocking.

    I see nothing wrong here.

They obviously tell you that overclocking will void your warranty, so why aren't they allowed to check it?

It's their right to do so, even if the cash lost would not be that significant in case they would give out free RMA's to everyone(Which I don't know if it is, really).

Frequency doesn't kill CPU's, voltage and heat do.

So if you had any overclock, intentional or not, for an instant at any point of time your warranty is void. Wow. Will you be able to check this in BIOS or something?

Because I expect it'll become a hell if you sell your 'blackboxed' CPU to some e-Bayer who's unaware of its history. No warranty usually has quite some impact on the price, but how would you know if the seller has the receipt and everything?

I hate when people are trying to take advantage of it by RMA it when they killed CPUs. Not very ethical.

Wow, this sucks. But if it's a value that can be changed when oc'd, it also means that it's possible to change it back to stock after you're done oc'ing. Unless you killed the chip during oc I guess.

im guessing that they can see that it has been changed. even if u set it back to default they are able ot see that at some point it was changed.

That is why the right thing to say would be "has been overclocked" and sometimes stating what your overclock can get you a better price anyway for those who are looking for a good clocking chip. Just always put the disclaimer that you won't guarantee their overclock results though
