The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

i'd say so. my e6600 @ 3.6 with 8800gts was only sucking ~350w (tested with power meter)

    why 850W ?

    1 3870x2 is like 200W max
    1 Q6600 is NEVER above 200W, more like 100-150W
    Mainboard+other stuff < 100W

if you count that together you get 700W max, but probably even 600W would fit.

ok, add some more for safety, but 850W is not necessary.

Of course it all depends on 12V lane(s), but that's another point.

my q6600 at 3.6 w/ 8800ultra and tons of fans sucked only 350W at peak from the wall... 350 * 0.8 and you're barely sucking half of a 600W's PSU capacity at load

hey guys, a little off topic but id like to go 3.6 with my proc. what voltages do u guys use? i want to keep them as low as i can.

p.s. Partners are piling up the cards and it looks like ATI is after another hardware launch. Partners have had the hardware for quite some time but it is the driver that delays the card's release.

The first sample driver that was sent to reviewers and customers has performance issues with some games, Crysis is one of them, but the next driver should patch this.

ATI’s partners will have a sufficient amount of cards and it doesn’t look that they can sell them out on the release date. ATI is putting a lot of effort to try to re-establish itself as a capable high end player and Radeon 3870 X2 is its change.

Let it enjoy the moment unit Geforce 9800X2 comes out. ATI hopes that Nvidia won’t be able to make enough, and to sail on that wave. G92 based cards were a success for Nvidia but due very weak availability, Nvidia’s G92 boosted Radeon 3870 and 3850 sales. Maybe it can happen again.

    Are you sure? I thought 230 W.
Anyways, it is not the Watts alone that counts, it is the amperes on the 12v rails.
My CM M850 (ATX 2.3) is good for my rig + 2x R680 in CF and Overdrive... it has 2x 8-pin plus 2x 6-pin...

In the toms review (if I remember correctly..sorry) they showed that it used less power at idle, but was well above the 8800 ultra and near the 2900xt in max power use. Its temps were above the ultra and again near the 2900xt.

of course 850W is nice, but much more expensive then good 700 or 750W or whatever.

230W is too much i think.
3870cf is tad over 200, so take away redudance of voltage regulator and stuff it should be 200 max.

But well, even if it's 210 or 220, it does not really matter.

    HD 2900 XT suport PCI-E 2.0
There was a picture of the 1Tf computer that AMD showed with 2x HD 2900XT in crossfire with only 1 pin conected to each card instead of 2.
PCI-E 2.0 permit to transport more power into the card throught the PCI-E slot.

No, it does not support it . Electrically I don't know (I'll bet no too), but the bus is running @ normal PCI-E speeds. Check it, or maybe you want to show me a 2900XT running PCI-E 2.0 on a X38 board

The HD 3xxx family was the first to support pci-e 2.0.

He's too much fanboy of ATI and AMD. And he gets owned over and over again because of it. As Unbornchild has said, the first ATI cards that have support for PCI-E 2.0 are the HD3000 series.

Eletricaly they do work. That´s the only thing I know, and by Toms review it´s prety obvious that it works with PCI-E 2.0 otherwise you didnt had those gains.

    Announcement: AMD HD3870X2 review

I have had a few emails today asking us where our review is for the new AMD X2 video card. The original NDA was due to break on the 23rd (today), however when we received our press sample, our graphics card analyst Veridian3 found issues which we reported to AMD HQ in Canada. These issues have since been verified and AMD have pushed the NDA date back several days. AMD are in fact working with us on driver issues and are rectifying many of the reports.

Our review will be published whenever we complete testing on the new drivers we are receiving,
as we aim to ensure the most accurate and detailed analysis we possibly can for our readers (you guys).

We would like to appauld AMD for their work this week and for the professional attitude they have shown to improve the end users experience.

I'll say it again. You're wrong, and Toms is wrong too. HD2900XT does not work at PCI-E 2.0 speeds. Only they know how they have obtained those scores. Just remember:

    HD2900 XT (512 MB) CF PCIe 1.0a x8x8
    HD2900 XT (512 MB) CF PCIe 1.0 x16x16

Did you notice the x16x16 thanks to X38? The gains are caused by that, not by 2.0 bandwidth.

New Drivers to Improve HD 3870 X2 Performance

VR-Zone has learned that Radeon display driver 8.45 v1.3 will improve performance and compatibility on the Radeon HD 3870 X2 over the current 8.45 v1.0 driver. The current set of drivers is facing game performance issues so benchmarks on it are not reflective on the actual gaming performance of the card. The new Catalyst will be out before 28th January according to AMD.
