Yes call Frys. Though I re-read your above post more closely (I'm at work) and considering it maxed above the spec at stock voltage maybe you would have some recourse with Intel. All I know for sure is any kind of problem when operating above spec voltage and clock speed obviously isn't warrantied in any way.

Have you used any other cpu with this setup?

As for a new thread I guess Intel Info and Support would be most appropriate.

    thanks WV...

Fry's directed me to Intel saying "beyond 30 days". Intel said momentary peaking over the 71C spec is normal. They also said that my third-party heatsink (thermalright ultra 120 extremem) can void the warranty. He suggested I put the stock heatsink on and run the same stress tests. Will do that tonight. Looking forward to those results lol

i don't have another cpu to use, but i am about to start shopping

Yeah I was going to suggest the stock HSF if you had one just to see. That's basic troubleshooting-changing factors in the equation to at least collect more information as to what the problem is not. While the most likely culprit seems to be the CPU itself, you certainly don't know never having used a different one in this same setup.

Also, for future reference in case ur not aware (this is definitely not the problem), Arctic Silver 5 is no longer the "champ".
The newer non-conductive TIMs, while hardly revolutionary, all beat AS5. I'm going to try some of that new OCZ Freeze next.

Good luck and let us know...

    Heres one - http://www.ocia.net/reviews/oczfreeze/page3.shtml

Personally I have been using Arctic cooling MX-2 which is also pretty good - not conductive and no cure time like AS5 - its also very easy to apply unlike some of the pastes which are like glue-lol . http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1148/3

Well I was basing that on 3 or so reviews/roundups I read a few days ago. Sorry don't remember where exactly. That tweaktown review was one.

The difference with the non-conductive tim was like 3 degrees at most but they did all beat the silver-based material.

Been trying to run my G0 L738A999 at 4.0

    FSB: 445 x 9
    vCore: 1.50
    NB: 1.40
    Ram: 2.20
    VID: 1.2375
    All else on auto.

Boots into Windows then the board shuts down after a minute or two.

I just flashed to 0404 on the P5K Dlx and now it oc's much better than on 0311.

Any suggestions on what I should change?

The honest answer is you tell us All chips are different, some do it, some don't, some require a lot of voltage, others don't. Some will do 3.6GHz, others 3.825GHz no problem or 4GHz if you have cooling for it.

Also you didn't state the VID of your CPU. Generally the lower the VID, the more chance you'll have fun overclocking it and the less voltage this requires.

That looks like a Intel Bad Axe board, I'm not familiar with it personally. For 3.6GHz you'll need 9x400. The board is based on a 975X chipset hence isn't all that wonderful for overclocking quads.

As others here will confirm you're better off with a P35 or X38/X48 (same thing) board for overclocking quads.

Wohoo this weekend I got my Q6600 G0 running! what a boost in certain apps & games
Just a little test, 333*9 running fine w/ stock vcore and TT bigtyp. Small oc, but still nice boost though

btw is coretemp the app to rely on when checking the temps? This evening, with extremely cold air, the coretemp showed 15/12/12/14 (celcius) and in load about 28 max. ???

lapping and more tweaking ahead, maybe voltmods too.

those temps are relatively frigid compared to other Q6600
I think you have a winner. what mobo are you using.

yeah, coretemp 0.96 is the latest version and is pretty popular for temp monitoring

Make sure you're using an up-to-date version of CoreTemp (0.95.4 or later). Earlier versions incorrectly reported the temps for Q6600 by -15C. You can tell by the tjunction reported by CoreTemp. Correct tjunction for Q6600 is 100C. If your version is reporting 85C, then you will need to add 15C to those temps.

Should be getting my new motherboard tomorrow. Abit IX38 Quad-GT. Right now i have a Q6600 G0 on a CFX3200 T2R. Max i can achieve on it is 3Ghz, and that is with 1.25v. 2.4ghz is done with 1.05v. Board either gives up above that, or drops the multi to 6x.

    L738B229
    VID = 1.275v

USing a basic waterloop, so temperatures won't be great. Going to modify it a bit when i get the new board in. Also i state above i need those voltages set in the bios to get it stable. Not sure wether cpuz is completely wrong or not, but check out the voltage it reads from idle to load:

    Idle:

    Load:

Anyway. That is as far as i can go right now. But hopefully tomorrow i will have some better results. I am aiming for 3.6ghz. Anyone else got some results for the L738B processors yet? Only seen a couple.

I once had a thermalright heatsink with a defective heatpipe. My CPU was way too hot, and found the heatsink wasn't that hot at the top parts heated by the pipe. Issues solved changing the heatsink. Rare case, but a broken heatpipe could cause your symptoms. Also, bad thermal compound application (try many mounts to rule this one out)

What does it mean, that for LOWER PLL voltages (like 1.65V actual), I only get 2 cores of a quad core.

For HIGHER PLL voltage, like 1.71V (actual), I got 4 cores well.
