    TJ07: air "build log"

you know you want to look...and comment

Hey guys, I finally got a new case upgrading from my aspire/apevia x-navigator to the Silverstone tj07 I wanted to post up a build log of sort to show that the tj07 can achieve great temps on air.

I am simpily amazed at this case, the quality is amazing, there is no comparison. I'll never buy anything other than silverstone and lian li from now on. The case is heavy but not as bad as I expected, its empty weight is about 30lbs according to my scale and full, mine is about 45lbs. Having the psu and hard drives on the bottom makes a huge difference. imo the x-navigator felt about just as heavy due to the unbalance in the weight with the psu at the top

I started off by sleeving the cables for the front panel audio, usb and power. I used techflex ogre because I wanted something a lil different from what everyone else has

Next, I started adding in my components. When I pulled my board out of the old case I left the heatsink on to allow my temps for cpu to be directly comparable and not have to consider differences in mounting or thermal paste amount. I also adjusted the top fans, I swapped out the rear one with a red led one that I had and have that as exhaust and changed the direction of the front one from exhaust to intake to allow for some cool air to come into the case. Also I pulled out the 2 rear 92mm fans since I don’t have airflow in that direction.

I then added my hard drives to the cages. I have 4 hdd so it was necessary to use both cages. One of them is a backup storage drive and happens to be ide, I was hopping to be able to mount the one cage up in the 5.25 area but was unable to quickly figure out a way to do so and scratched that idea. I may look into doing this later but not caring too much now.

I had started off with the psu in the back slot but after attempting cable management found out that was a bad idea so I moved it to the front slot to allow all my extra cables to get stuffed behind the psu.
Heres a shot of the backside. No holes in the board tray, I’m not ready to drill into a $300 case

At this point I plan on sleeving the cable for the zalman on my vid card, the rear usb bracket and not sure what I’ll do with the pci slot fan and the switch for the UV cathodes. I’m not sure what color to do these, continue with the ogre or go with uv blue sleeve replacing the blue spiral wrap that I have on there for now.

    TEMPS:
    Old case:
    Board 30C
    Cpu core 1 22C
    Cpu core 2 30C
    Vid card 37C
    TJ07
    Board 27C
    Core 1 23C
    Core 2 30C
    Vid card 35C

    Conclusion:
TJ07 is not bad at air cooling…depending on what parts you have. In my situation, my board and vid card temps went down. If I was running sli that could be different but I’ll never know.

I’ll also be replacing the stock fans shortly and attempting to hook them up to my hardcano 13…if I can get that to work. Since my temps are good I plan to stick with similar airflow fans, I don’t know the cfm of the stock ones but I’ll assume its around 35-40. I’m planning on going with some scythe’s, either minebea or s-flex

    NICE

i just got my TJ07 and im doing some crazy stuff to it. im gonna invert the motherboard tray to run in BTX fashion. i will be mounting both a Thermalchill PA120.2 and PA120.3 in the bottom of the case as well as a PA120.2 up top.
mine is gonna be pretty stuffed comparied to yours.

IT'S NICE TO SEE AN AIR COOLED TJ07 FOR A CHANGE. i know thats weird to say, but, you hardly see an air cooled TJ07 these days.

    NICE WORK!

I've been thinking about doing the same, an air cooler TJ07 once the new quads come out and the video cards as well. I have to stop spending money and save though ;(

thanks guys. i'm still waiting for the fans to get here, since 3AM yesturday they've been sitting a roughly 2hr drive away. if UPS has a night shift tonight then they could be here tomorrow.

fitseries3, i'd like to try running the case with the board inverted at some point but didnt feel like drilling out the rivets yet. sounds like a sweet setup you'll have.

    Looking great.

I'm guessing your temps are off a bit though (unless your ambient is very low) ... could be Tjunction is set at 85 degrees instead of 100 ... still nice temps, even adding 15 degrees.

rivets? mine is all screws. the whole thing come apart with screws. the case was designed to run either way.

shazza, ambient is 19-20C (67-69F) so that core 1 temp is realistic. i'm using everest 4.20.1170 but just downloaded the new core temp and it is showing the same temps. core temp does not show a tjunction for me.

fitseries3, the bottom boardtray rail that connects with the divider is held in with rivets for me but yea other than that the whole rest of the case is screws and there are holes for both rails to mount on the other side

oops ... just saw that you have the AMD processor, so guessing that's why there's no Tj Max.

i got the fans on the 4th but their just fans so i didnt post about it. the scythe’s are great, very quiet.

i got a lil bored the other night and started messin around with the one hard drive cage, i really wanted this up top in the 5.25 bays. i found a way which required drilling 4 holes in the cage. from this first pic, i lined the top of the cage up with the bottom of the next bay as shown by the line. i used a sharpie to mark on the cage where the holes of the 4 screws was and used a 1/8inch bit to drill the holes. the screws that i used were 6-32 and 1/2inch long. i ran the screws thru the holes that i drilled in the cage and it actually threaded the hole so that was all i needed but was prepared to use nuts on the other side. the 2 screws that i circled go thru the bottom screw of the bay covers and then into the cage so i have to put the cover in before those screws (i forgot the first time).

with one of the cages out of the bottom i was able to re-route some of the front panel cables down thru the holes in the divider next to that bay and then out thru the big hole.

i'm not happy with the ogre sleeving its not very UV reactive. i'm thinking of switching to orange or normal UV green. at some point i'd also like to replace the top mesh with a 2*120 rad grill, i know that it wont fit right in so i am thinking of using a piece of UV green or blue acrylic. i'd mount the grill to the acrylic and the acrylic to the top of the case on the inside and mount the fans to the acrylic. i'd cut the acrylic to the same patern as the grill, i was thinking of the A.C Ryan stripes grill, i think the hexx grill would look better but theres no way i could cut out the pattern to match. only problem is i dont have money for the parts or a dremel to cut the acrylic. i'd love to powder coat the interior black but thats far from happening $$ wise

for an air case y didnt u spend half the money on an Antec 900 or something similar. you dont need the huge case to air cool and the 900 is like a wind tunnel with 4 120mm fans and the 200mm top fan

Why settle for less when you can buy the best ?

Tj07 is a super nice case with plenty of room to grow if he decides to water cool later.

that pretty much sums it up. my previous case was an aspire x-navigator and it was too small, i felt cramped in it and hated working on it. i love the length that i gained from getting a case that supports eatx and the dual psu support should i need more power at some point. also, i love the layout/design and room to grow. i built a pc for a friend and used a lian li pc-7b plus II and was amazed at the quality of the build and after the hell i went thru with the aspire i wasn't gona settle for less than lian li or silverstone. looking back the only other case that i wish i had added to the list of possibilities was the cooler master STC-T01-UWK which might have won since its like 1/3 the price but o well. i'm very happy with the tj07.

    edit
also theres a myth that the tj07 doesnt do air cooling well but with my components i proved that wrong. i can cruch wcg and play a game and none of my temps go over 40-43C...at stock

Cool, I see you moved the HDD cage up to the 5.25 bay area. Should you be interested in decoupling the HDD cage from the rest of the case should you have a Raptor or noisier drive...get some 3/4" long standoffs and grommets (silicone Antec P180 grommets shown in my photos), this makes a nice floating HDD mounting. Then should you wish, get some Dynamat Xtreem and wrap the HDD cage, very noticable difference in seek noise with that stuff on the cage.

about 2 weeks ago i got bored and got around to sleeving some more cables, i did the pci bracket usb, fan on my 7900GS and did one of the sata cables cause it goes to my SATA DVD drive.

when i have some money/once i get a job (graduate college in May with a BS in Mechanical Engineering ) i'll get around to painting or powdercoating the interior black, sleeving the rest of the SATA cables blue, get another set of UV cathodes and maybe a few other things.

since my last post in here, i got some free time and a dremel and did a lil cutting to increase cable management

first, i cut a hole in the divider behind the board tray to route wires up thru the back

for now, i only added 2 holes to the board tray, 1 for the pci-e power and the other for 4 pin atx cable

also on the divider, i cut out a lil section above the hard drives so i could route my cables up from the drives. to do this, i also had to filp the hard drives upside down which required drilling new holes in the hd cage. flipping the drives also made it easier to get power to all the drives, with them right side up it was hard getting power to the lowest drive because of the screw piece that holds the cage into the case bracket.

with the cables running up thru the back it was easy to make them go straight across to the sata port, thats 3 cables one behind the other. i'll have to see if they'll fit thru the hole with the pci-e

i also did some non case related mods, i know that my chipset gets fairly hot (according to an IR temp guage, 40C+ at idle). so i decided to replace the thermal paste, getting rid of the AS5 and putting on IC D7. i also decided to get rid of the plastic clips that hold the heatpipe to the board and use screws (#4-40 screws) and a nut with the stock spring. this would allow me to apply more pressure and possibly increase contact. upon booting up i ran orthos for 30 minutes to create some heat and measured the chipset temp again. i'm now seeing 35C, a 5C drop.

    mounting of heatpipe

a few days ago i got an idea after checking out Steffen's CyberGreen log, he put his custom cut window on the inside of the panel and i thought it looked a bit cleaner. i pulled the stock screws out of my window, checked if there was enough clearance for the stock window to fit on the inside, there is . it seems that the stock screws are metric but i used a few #6-32's (which are bigger than the metric's) that i had laying around, i took it slow and was able to get them in and thread the plastic so i wouldn't have to use nuts to hold the window on. i only had 4 of the 8 screws that i need so i'll be ordering some from mcmaster.

    edit: adding pics of window

Not bad at all. Looks nice. I think you should switch to all orange sleeving and sata cables. Would look very nice when you get the inside powdered coated
