Max temp with fans PELTING (stock) was ~70c with ATI tool stress test... This thing could do with some aftermarket methinks!

After adding Zalman VF900cu (fit perfectly with 7600gt holes and settings) at high speed, max temp at stock settings came to 50c.

    So I overclocked...

With core at 715, and memory at 1110, 3dmark06 score was 5847 Marks , with temps JUST touching 55c.

I've now dropped it to 710 and 1100, with idle temp 40c and max about 52-53.

Perhaps the memory is holding your card back... I'm surprised that overclocking yielded so little performance.

    MAX OC w/ Zalman VF900 >> 715Mhz core // 1145Mhz memory :

720 gave me a little green dot on the fuzzy cube when "scanning for artifacts".

I just tried the memory. Got up to 1155 (with find max mem), then cube turned into a big yellow square, with something about direct x not matching?

(Stock settings with stock cooler got to 70c)

Does this mean that shops will start selling the card early or that particular shop that just sold the card will get in trouble?

/nV ninjas will raid the shop?

128-bit memory is holding that card back Big time, and nvidia knows it, the 8600gts has a ~12% core clock advantage, but a 40% memclock increase over the 8600GT (assuming gt:700, gts:1000). doesn't clock as high as I'd expect.

Think again. That's with my 24/7 CPU clock and fairly low GPU clocks (can do 735/855 bench stable).

Well my SM3 clobbers the 8600's, but I get beat slightly in SM2.

looks to me that the 8600gts will be very good in SM2. SM3 doesn't look so great.

    Just looking at regular overclocks...

    8600gts OC (coolaler)
    SM2: 2700
    SM3: 2400

    x1900gt OC (NickS)
    SM2: 2260
    SM3: 2530

Edit: NickS beat me to it...I was trying to see if the same pattern occurs in the 8800 products, it does not.

    Very strange...Wonder if it's a driver bug?
    That is all.

    Peace and love.

Maybe tonight I'll do some cold 06 runs for the fun of it, see if I can get near 6.8k or so.

nVidia 7600GT was also slow when it came out, compared to the (previous generation) high-end in that time. 8600GT has the performance you should expect for an mid-range card, nothing less or more.

The thing is buddy, most people don't really count the V-mods or Shamino's slick and nasty cooling as an even comparison.

Granted, I do agree they should play a role considering how easy the mods are, and most people 'round here will use nice air or wawa on their cards...Still. If you do count that article (mods/cooling), the 8600gts is a pretty nice card and is comparable or exceeding last gen's performance parts...Of course you'd also have take into account the 7900gs can be conductive ink modded as well and give a slightly better score.

It's pretty mucky. I think it comes down to if you want DX10 support, and the question of how it will perform using it. If it does reasonable, I think it will have it's place for replacing the current ~$200 cards.
    That is all.

    Peace and love.

Well, this is XS, so I'm at least expecting stock cooling to be out of the question. Still even if you take volt mods out of account, ~6100 is within the capabilities of the 8600GTS. It really is a small difference, and like Perkam says, it's the games that matter anyway.

So basically a vmodded 7900GT stomps a mudhole in the 8600GTS' aszz.

the scores on the topic was with zalman vf900 ,with stok cooling and default clocks the card reach 70c

    with zalman vf900 max clocks = 715/1145

And the problem i see its not the OC , its the score , form default clocks to OC 715/1145 only ~200 points

Perhaps the memory is holding your card back... I'm surprised that overclocking yielded so little performance.

Btw: In Games seems Better than in Benchmakrs (3Dmark)

In terms of overclocking, both are overclocking masters when overclocked the "professional" way... But close to 60% headroom can be garnered on the 7900GTbut "only" about 35%on the 8600GTS. For how well this card overclocks, http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4883

    7900GT performence ( a litle better) with DX10 , Not BAD for 200$
