NO. you MUST replace the SMD resistor to go above 1.55V: it changes voltage table from hammer to VRM9. Besides, if are using only air or water cooling, 1.4-1.55V is more than enough. With more voltage you will only get very small improvement, yet a LOT more heat.

Anything over 1.2V (stock) is too much for the standard air cooler. I dont think you should do Vgpu mod unless you change the cooling. People are getting 70-80C+ which is WAY too high... you dont want to kill your new card do you? It costs only a little $$$ for a better cooler (ex Zalman VF700, VF900, Artic Cooling NV5).

Original cooler can hardly take 1.4V so yes 1.55V would be to much for stock cooling

If u have watercooling than u can set ur voltage @1.55V (i have 43°C on load @1.55V so no problems here )

with 1.27V the card maxed out @610 with 1.55V i hit the wall@720..

I get 660 with 1.4v under water, looking to hit over 700 with the 1.55v?

my friend with a XFX 7900GT like mine with 1.40v can bench ate 670Mhz core and with 1.45v can get 690Mhz.


im thinking in the 1.50vmod , thats why im asking if you notice much more improve from 1.50v to 1.55v

I also have some of the values in case you all are replacing the resistors themselves (like i did - just asked my tech for a favor for free lunch .

All resistors are 0603's, looks like 5% tolerance only.

res to remove for ocp is 1.8k value
res to replace for 1.5v is 5k

I did the 1.4 mod and got my GPU up to 650 no problems. I dont know however why my temperature have always been so high! I am hitting 68 full load now will the nv5 rev 3 installed, idle is at 45. I think it has to be the sensor. I even had 38 degrees idle with the 7800 gt overclocked with the zalman cooler.

Finally hit 700 core, ran 3DM06 at 713 but i'm sure there were a couple of flashes. Happy at 700/1650 though, not bad for a £200 card:p

If anyones interested I did the 1.4v, 1.5v and 1.55v mods. The max for each were 650 for 1.4v and 685 for 1.5v, Not sure on the 1.55v max yet - still in testings. So as you can see I dont have the best clocking card ever as I saw a few 670+ on 1.4v but it shows you can stil hit 700 core without the best core.

i did the MOD today , before the MOD i had 29c now i have 31c idle with 1.4v MOD.(Watercooled)

I had a silencer on my old 6800GT once, and I found out that I had applied the Arctic Silver Ceramique thermal paste on the memory just a little too thick, which caused the gpu area to 'hover above' my gpu, well there was contact, but not really with enough pressure, results were 10c worse than my stock cooler lol... then I applied the much thinner supplied goop on the memory and Ceramique on the gpu and all was well... I'd prefer the Zalman now though, but that's just my personal favorite

I did also used the thermal pads. I was thinking maybe it had to do with the thermal pads being so thick.....dont know if I want to risk pulling off a memory chip....

Actually believe it or not, now that you mention it thats exactly what happened. There are marks on the bottom of the card that I was wondering what the hell they were, but oyu know what, they line up exactly with an APG slot.

I never even tried 1.4v, went right for 1.55. I think I'm going to go for 1.6 sometime this weekend after I read up more on the mod.

sir, you have truely made my day. Just one more question while we are still on the topic of scraches... were there any bite-marks?

You can get very close to 1.6V without replacing the 50K resistor, by using the variable resistor Vgpu mod... however that method only gives additional 0.07-0.09V on top of what the Vid pins are set at.

If you plan to continue past 1.6V (I dont even know why you bother with such a small increase), replacing 50K is a must. But, beware that since you are effectively switched from 1.2V-1.55V to 1.5V-1.7V range, that you will have to change your original mod because values higher than 1.7V are not valid (ie 1.55V + remove resistor = not work)
