The cables go through my logic/motherboard, not the PSU. Only rated to supply a max of 225w through the cables. Some folks use a 6-8 pin adaptor, some have success, some have issues, few end up with a dead system.

What capacity is your power supply? If it is at least 550W and of good quality, you will be ok for even the 290X I believe. You do realize the pin connectors is the least of your concerns, because almost every high end Radeon comes with a Molex to 8 pin adapter?

EDIT: I saw your comments on the adapter, I had no problems with it, as long as you got a good power supply.
