I'm conflicted between buying a new portrait lens for Xmas photos or a new video card. I think I'll get both!

    One.Shot,

Somewhat peculiar but still very effective conflict resolution...

I like your way of thinking.

I also have the 35mm 1.8. I got it for $199.99 this past spring. It's a pretty nice lens.

Here is a shot taken with it from the local Natural History Museum

Yep, I have the 50mm 1.8G for a few years now. That lens goes on my D300 whenever my 300mm f/4 prime + 1.4x TC Nikon setup isn't on.

    [Ion],

You need to put 4 WUs each on those cards. I have a lowly Dual Core w/o HT and run 4 and pull 245k-250k WCG PPD on my 7770 @1050 core.

I'll check that out. I'm already pulling close to 100k PPD ATM (BOINC) with the 3 cards. The problem is I only have 8 threads--and 4 WUs/card would use 12. But it could be worth trying and giving a shot--thank you!

i am running 0,5cpu so you should be fine. only problem is when a couple wu start and finish at the same time the cpu is a 100% where as the gpu hovers around 50% but theres just no way to fix that.

WCG is excellent for long term testing, as our rigs run 24/7. Many of my rigs have run for three full years 24/7. In total we speak of about 23 machines. It is true that I have always bought top components of the moment. I did have two chassis fan that failed. All my Asus boards have never had a problem except for one old model over four years full work that started becoming erratic. My Intel CPUs all 980X from 2009 and one 3960X from 2011 never had a problem and they run all at a minimum of 4 Ghz or over. About three ram sticks did fail over more than 60 sticks. And two power supply units did also fail by becoming unstable. Hard disks never had a problem, and one CD-DVD reader failed. The most delicate components have been the Nvidia CPUs the 5xx series of whom I got many boards that failed during the warranty period when put under parallel computing stress. The manufacturer alway has exchanged them with a new one or reimbursed the full price.
In fact I do change sometimes the components before they had the time to fail because technology progresses.

Set <avg_ncpus>to 0.75 and you should have 12 threads. 100k BOINC is pretty descent though for 3x 7770's so there may not be much to gain from this. Try it and see!

Here are my last couple days results plus this mornings running 4 WUs on my 2 core/thread limited setup...

    11/30/2012 0:001:21:44:21 126,269 299
    11/29/2012 0:003:22:28:32 267,363 625

    11/27/2012 0:003:18:32:31 256,147 589
    11/26/2012 0:003:15:04:52 245,170 556

If you go to 4 per card for a total of 12 you should pick up about 5 to 10k+ BOINC PPD for your setup I would think.

If you have less cores than threads, stagger the work units by a couple percent. I'm running 6 gpu threads on 2 cores (.33 cpu - .166 gpu) and my cpu usage still doesn't stay at 100% very often when the wu's are spaced properly. 7.05's are cpu heavy as they start, then at 49.7 -50% (end of first wu, start of second one) and again at 99.7%/0.00%. I'm getting more points this way and I'm only on a 7660D @ 1140mhz.

The CPU is at 4.2 and all cards are at 1050 / 902 with the voltage dropped on gpu .05 and dropped .2 on mem to help keep the heat sandwich cool. Running 8 tasks per gpu and .5 per cpu for a total of 24 concurrent w/u's. I still get a random power down about once a day that I am working on but she has been getting around 1.8mill wcg a day for the past few days.

Thanks for above data input. What BOINC manager version are you using? Which version of AMD video drivers are you using? Are you using CCC? Which software are you using to manage your video card voltages?

I should be getting a new a new MSI 7970 OC 1050 MHZ tomorrow. I planned to put it in the rig in my signature to replace the 6990 that is now there and then crunch ATI hcc_1 GPU WUs only. I am now using BOINC 7.0.36 and CAT 12.10 with CCC. I plan to update the to CAT 12.11 Beta x (?) when I exchange the video cards since I read that the 12.11 drivers were better for 7xxx series. (With or without CCC?). Any inputs an optimum possible OC, custom CAT install and numbers of ATI hcc_1 GPU WUs to run with new setup will be much appreciated.

I sure wish that I had a better CPU with a 6/12 thread set up. Santa what I want for Christmas is a 2011 MB with a 3930 CPU...!! Just in case Santa finds out I have been a bad boy; I better visit the "Free Geek" used computer store in Vancouver nexrt week to see if there are any realistic bargains to be had.

    Thanks again for above inputs,
    Jean-Guy

Jeanguy, I am using Windows 7, Boinc ver 7.0.36 with ati catalyst 12.11 beta 4 and I use MSI Afterburner to overclock and control the voltages. I hope that helps, but like I said, I am still having an intermittent issue that I am still troubleshooting.

Thx retro and sorry for the tire tracks oc I appreciate all you do on the forums, your app info thread has been a great help.
