One thing seems true in this new gen GPU from AMD, the buswidth isn't affected by the number of ROPs as previously done, since it has been decoupled in the new GCN mArch. A Tahiti Pro aka HD 7950 can retain 384 bit buswidth and 3 GB configuration (though perhaps with lower clocked memory chips) even with lesser ROPs and SPs compared to its bigger brother.

    EDIT:

AMD has not done a big daddy GPU for quite some time, they rather go with the dual GPU route which is a super easy with smaller cores its more about mm2 than freq.
Well, going by the latest rumor like the one in the first page, it seems HD 7970 will be ~ GTX 680, since NVidia's new gen chip won't be the big daddy one, though not quite that small either. The big daddy, might arrive later this year or early next year, when TSMC's 28 nm process getting more mature and less risky. We might see parity from both camps after long, long time.

By 780 i meant the top end Nvidia card the 1500 core one what ever it ends up being called.

This is quite the problem, The rumors about the Nvidia ones just look a bad marketing.... 768-1024-1500- tommorow 2000Cuda cores ? double shader speed, no more double shader speed... I have the feeling we speak about 2 generations or 2 launch ( and one is not set to occurs soon )....

For be honest, i have not really any problem to drop my 2x 5870 1024mb for 2x 7970 3gb, based on leak we have. I will wait 1) reviews ( lol ), 2) a bit more infos about nvidia's one.. but this should put a big gain vs my actual setup..
Im curious to see numbers vs a HD5870 .

I am interested in 7970's not just because of performance but also the standby power consumption, my machine is active for long long periods of time both of them have GPU's and neither can standby on 3-5w :P

Cost-Effective Radeon HD 7900 PCB Already In The Works - techPowerUp
A little earlier today, we showed you pictures of AMD's first Radeon HD 7900 series single-GPU PCB that makes use of digital-PWM power delivery. Some of the first batches of Radeon HD 7900 graphics cards will stick to that PCB and board design, as it's backed by AMD's engineering. Even as the SKU's launch is less than 24 hours away, there are pictures of AMD's cost-effective Radeon HD 7900 PCB surfacing on Asian media sites. Once ready, AMD add-in board partners can opt for this cost-effective PCB if they want to fine-tune their prices. It looks like AMD is ready well ahead to face competition from NVIDIA, with its GeForce Kepler 104 (GK104) GPU... (read all)

In all honesty, it's reminding me a LOT of the build-up to the 8800GTX launch, where almost every day we heard a different specification on the chip. In all fairness though, NVidia haven't officially stated anything except that kepler is going to be a LOT more efficient than fermi was.

And by more efficient you mean like GTX480?

looks like a new 5870; available before nvidia's cards; performance 50-60% higher than its predecessor (4890); great performance/watt and insane idle power

i'll stick to my 6970 as i'm still on a 24" screen and the most demanding game i own is skyrim, but this looks like a solid upgrade for everyone running 5xxx and 4xx cards (seems like an 70-100% speed bump over those cards) and it's going to drop like a bomb if nvidia fails to react within 3 months like it did in the 5870 days

PS: i doubt that we're ever going to see another X1900XTX again (nowadays it's 60% faster than its direct competitor (7900GTX), this card was insane) and i think that some people have set their expectations way too high

Normal if they set the fan at 100% manually... the fan on the 7970 run a lot faster at 100% of the 6970 one... You can easely hear it in the mp3 posted. i bet for 1.5x the max rpm of the previous card. you will never approach this.

Unfortunatelly Beta 9 does not recognize clocks after enabling unofficial oc. On default it does but limits are the same as in overdrive :-/

Hope to see afterburner update soon.

The curve is an important feature of OTES design - when you have multiple cards in CrossfireX and if cards are close to each other it helps with the airflow.

    You'll know everything later tonight.

However, that isn't saying NVIDIA is slacking. If history is any indication, NVIDIA is more than content to let AMD prematurely blow their load with a paper launch and then respond with their own parts a bit further down the road.

Will we only be seeing 79xx paper launch tomorrow or will the 78xx's be included?

A paper launch will still reveal all the real details we want.

I need a new GPU and a 7970 might be a good pick depending on power consumption, idle usage and performance at high resolutions like 2560x

AMD typically sticks to proper NDA times like midnight EST unlike Intel's midnight PST or NVIDIA's 9AM EST. Whether or not that happens this time around....we'll, you'll find out soon enough.
