It's come to my attention that Tiago Sousa, principle r&d graphics programmer at Crytek, deleted his tweet about currently working on DX11 for Crysis 2... Looks like the cancellation of a DX11 patch may be the sad truth after all.
How much you wanna bet they're going to sit on it until a Crysis 2 expansion set, ala EA "lets charge for EVERYTHING" style.
Crytek will realize they f'kd their franchise by screwing the PC gamers when Battlefield 3 sales blows it out of the water.

Dude, my laptop with a 5470 with a measly 80 shaders can run Crysis and Crysis warhead just fine. The engine scales down amazingly well.
What would you rather have?
A. Game that looks really good at medium settings and runs at current hardware, but looks better than anything presented so far at max settings, but needs next-gen hardware.
B. Game that looks really good at max settings and runs at current hardware, but there's no way to increase the graphics further.
Crysis 1 went with A, and I'm glad it went with that choice. It made sure new and faster hardware than available was needed. That's what's pushing PC-gaming graphics!
with sil/xfire its tough for games to fall into category A
the average person might have a gpu worth 100$, but you can spend nearly 2000$ on gpus.
so if one person has duel 6990s, and another has a mainstream card (sub 200$ card), how many generations will it take before mainstream are above the current maximum?

it really depends on how someone classifies a generation then
4800 to 5800, die shrink and larger chip thus doubled
5800 to 6800 was just optimization and so minor gains, even though its a year after
6800 to 7800 should be about double due to the major shrink happening, but thats easily another year away.
so overall its about 50% perf increase per year
perf/$ however im not so sure about. when the 5800s came out, perf/$ didnt drop a dime, for months, and in the last 2 years things have only become a little better looking at the overall picture. im thinking of getting a 6950, but its only ~3x faster than my 4850, but the current price of the 6950 is also about 3x that of the old price i paid for my 4850 about 18 months ago
in summary, i dont think perf increases are really happening as fast as people think.
