Ahh cool. Yeah i gave my whole system a thorough clean the other day. My cpu heatsink was clogged to hell with dust as well as around the vrm area on my motherboard, has dramatically lowered temps. I also was brave enough to open up my PSU which was ungodly, it hasn't seen the light of day since i got it about 4 years ago mega peace of mind now. As for the GPU, i just stuck the dyson at the vents and the fan, didn't do much in terms of temps, didn't expect it to really. Hasn't been long enough yet to the point where i'm brave enough to apply new paste or of the sort.

My card idles at 49C @ 25% fan speed. Is this too high? I haven't set up any fan profiles yet.

It sounds a tad high, mine idles at 30-35c depending on the ambient, at 25% as well. I can imagine it going up to 40c in summer though (yet to experience summer with this card).

You're not running dual monitors or anything are u? Idle clocks and voltage should be 250/150 and 0.9v just for reference.

Running a single 30" @ 2560x1600. Idle clocks are 250/150 and 0.9v although they frequently get bumped up to 500/1250 while watching YouTube videos or movings.

Is something wrong here? Maybe I should try to put the card into a lower PCIe slot?

HIS non reference 2GB card, unlocked shaders seems OK.

Nice finding! PCB looks shorter than reference, also it seems there's no Volterra controller on that one... confirm?

I'm running two unlocked HIS 6950's in crossfire and my top card idles around 60 and the bottom in the 32-35 range. Mine are spaced two slots apart as having them sandwiched made the bottom card idle around 40. When benching neither card goes north of 80C.

Edit: I am running dual 23" 1920x1080 monitors which means the top card doesn't clock down fully when idling.

VRAM is pretty o'cable too on this HIS card.

It seems that there is a golden batch of week 50 Hynix GDDR5 VRAM which can perform up to 1600 MHz floating around on certain HD 69xx cards... so I quickly referred back and rechecked my photos on the HIS card. Oh well, this card has the earlier week 47 batch but never mind, let's do some pushing and see how far it can climb nonetheless.

Keeping the core at 900 MHz, I started pushing the RAM from 1400 MHz and compared 3D11 scores while eyeballing that there are no visual artefacts during the runs. Looks like the current batch of cards with week 47 RAM isn't too bad either.

I just ran 3DMark 11 (performance) with and without the power control option.

    Unlocked 6950 (stock clocks):
    Without - 5021
    +10% PC - 5012

Seems to be no impact from the power control option in Overdrive, at least in the synthetic benchmarks. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Interesting. I'm using the very top PCIe slot, nearest to the northbridge and CPU heatsink. Maybe some heat is dissipating from there, causing the card to idle at ~50C.

Do you think I should try a lower slot? I've got my sound card in the lowest slot so I may have to switch them around. I doubt I can use the slot at the very bottom because there is no room for the card. It's either middle or top PCIe slot with this case/motherboard.

@mac im glad you brought that up because like you i thought my vram would overclock higher so i went ahead and clocked mine and it benches at 1550 as well but 1500mhz is good for gaming..but this also made me try to attempt to overclock my gpu further and happy to say i got 1000/1500 stable gaming stock cooler with 1.275v very happy with my $235 6950

Is it easy to check the batch on the memory? I would love to check mine out but I have never tinkered with my VC's before so any advice would be great.

My #1 card is in the top spot and right now it is idling at 60C with 800/1250 clocks (sometimes switching to 500/1250) at 1.1v on dual monitors. My second card is idling at 37C on 250/1500 clocks .9v. My ambient temp is 20C in the room right now.

I wonder if reapplying the TIM would help. Someone said its fairly easy to do on the 6950's but I have never tried so not sure.

Running a single 30" 2560x1600. I'm a bit uneasy as my idle temp (47-49C) seems higher than what everyone else is seeing.

Not sure if its just an 'unlucky' card or if it is the positioning (i.e. too close to the CPU and TRUE-120)...

my card typically idles in the 60s with the fan on like 30% but this is with 1.3v and 500/1500mhz idle cause two lcds connected.

Hey guys, quick question here: Are you folks still having success flashing 6950s to 6970s? I ask because I can get a pair of Gigabyte HD6950 2GB cards for pretty cheap and was wondering if they are still unlocking?

They should, unless they are non-reference ones.

Noob question, but when you say "reference" one, you mean one with the basic PCB right ? Is there a method to check if a card has it, except by looking at the pictures taken by the seller ?
Sorry for my bad english, I'm trying to improve it

You cannot flash a non-reference HD6950 card Direct CUII to a Reference ATI HD6950 Bios , you will brick yor card if you try.
But you can try to open the shaders and mod your bios for voltage using RBE 1.27
