ATI Radeon HD 5870 Reference Design 240 W
ATI Radeon HD 6970 Reference Design 233 W
In VR-Zone, it's 6W difference but the PowerTune slider is set at +20%

+20% for the 250W default for 6970 is 300W ceiling, so worst case is its drawing 50W more, so its anywhere from 6 - 56W lower. Wish they did a friggin chart w/o powertune on

I suggest all of you just close eyes on all those reviews, and wait till reviewers will have latest drivers (8.801+)

ATI needs more time to work on the drivers.

ATI takes a lot of time to work on the drivers

That said, they do improve... look at Vantage 5870 scores at release to today... huuuugge increase. And for that matter, since 480's release, they've managed to creep up as well

The 6970 card runs slower than the GTX 580 and runs hotter than the GTX 580? WTF?

    ATI really messed up here.

So far VERY disappointing. Was ready to buy a new video card today. Thanks for pissing away a 1 year lead, ATI.

Holding out hope that this is some kind of fubar where some of the sites got 'crippled' drivers, but even in that case AMD is screwing up the launch.

I think I'm going to make it a rule to only trust the reviews that use the same powertune settings for the benchmarks and the power consumption figures....

*EDIT* To all the people complaining about temperatures, you have to consider the fan speeds. The power consumption of the 6900 series is lower than that of the 500 series across the board, so they necessarily run cooler at the same cooling capacity.

Hotter isn't a big deal if it's the fan speed, which is apparently set really low, which of course, those reviews managed to neglect

Look at the games being benched... some of them are picking some very Nvidia-heavy games to bench (HAWX2, Lost Planet 2 for example)

Gonna go ahead and sum up what games will do what right now at 2560x1600

Games that will be Nvidia wins:

    Lost Planet 2
    HAWX 2
    Battleforge

Games that will be AMD wins:
    F1 2010

Games that will be neck and neck:
    Crysis
    Resident Evil 5

Games that will show immense improvement for 6970 over 5870:
    Stalker:CoP
    Dirt 2 (minimum FPS)
    Metro 2033

This reminds me of the 480 launch... performance was all over the place due to the new architecture and differences between DX11 and legacy hardware games

Do we know for a fact that the new 8.801 driver or an upcoming driver increase performance enough to make up for its current shortcomings?

No way, is that a driver developer?

    I just noticed this:

    http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=3

The 6970 only has 1536 Stream Processors, and yet it's beating the 5870 (1600 SP) by a healthy margin. What happened to the 1920 SP monster we were hearing about???

I don't believe it. They disabled some of the SP's.

The HD 6970 is AMD's version of the GTX 480!

How can you say hot at normal noise fan is ok when it would be noisy to oc when a 580 is not?

    That's a 20% loss in SP's.

Not for the price of $369 which is cheaper than the price of the 5870 at newegg in a lot of cases

But it's not the full spec card they were going to release. The 6970 only has 1536 SP's!

That leaves room for a 6990!

Yet its performance is amazingly inconsistent, sometimes not much faster than the 5870, being upward of 35% slower @ 2560x1600 than a 580, while sometimes it's within 5% either way. Seems priced accurately, but can't imagine how noisy it will become when oc'ing since its stock fan for normal noise runs very hot per all the reviews thus far .
