There just aren't many 6870s listed at Newegg or Amazon. They seem to be selling out quick. GTX460 on the other hand has two pages of cards listed at Newegg. It's just typical retailer gouging. People are apparently willing to pay these prices.

I'm not at all surprised that GTX580 is selling for over MSRP. If you're buying a $500 video card at launch with limited availability you can afford to pay an extra 15% and the retailers know that.

As always it's just supply and demand.

Gotta agree with others here, that seems odd, completely different price point. Did a quick look on Newegg.com, least expensive 6870 is $259.99, half of them are sold out. Newegg is gouging a bit it seems.

    Newegg ALWAYS gouges now

They used to be my favorite place to shop... now their gouging tactics + CA sales tax has killed it for me and I look elsewhere for deals

It's also the fact they hvae that 10% coupon... no surprise, everything high in demand went up 10%

Aside form that.. there's some serious trolling going on in this thread too /sigh

Time on market. Yes, comparing Barts to GTX580 is pretty bad, 3 weeks to a few days but it better than comparing Barts, again 3 weeks, to GTX460 which has been on the market 4 months.

LordEC911 a fanboi? now i've heard it all...

seems to me like component sortages are probably keeping channel supply tight and therefor raising prices, retailers will probably hold the prices until after the holliday shopping season.

Well I do admit to having a bit of a red tinge, more of a very light pink, but that is due to having much better/easier info on that side of the camp. I try to stay pretty neutral but we all know that is impossible, no one is bias free.

i agree, but you are not a fanboi. we all have personal preferences (i like the green team for folding), but that doesn't have to factor into a tech discussion. and there is no reason to call someone a fanboi just because they don't agree with you. that is a fundamental problem i have with the news section of this forum.

I wonder how many cards can fit on a freight pallet. Standard size is 48"x40" with a maximum weight of about 1,600lbs (hehe... ya... stacked 20' high).

My guess is about 200 cards since I recall the max allowable height is about 5'.

I used to do a ton of freight shipping when I managed Oettinger Performance GmbH @ CEC Wheels here in North America.

Btw.... I find it odd that the HD6870 is priced on average $100 lower than the older HD5870. @ Fry's you can get the 6870 for $259-$299 while the 5870 runs $339-$399.

You mean how the HD5970 is still $700+? Ouch....
I tend to don't really believe peoples interested on the 6870 and 200-250 dollars gpu are suddenly massively interested by a 500+ dollars gpu ...
Not all want buy high end and put 500 dollars on a GPU.

The opposite happened in my country, we can easily get 6850-70 since day 1, OTOH 580 still unavailable till this very moment. Maybe its about market segment e.g Nvidia prefered US/EUROPE market while ATI concentrate on ASIA/AUS

comparing the availability of the 580 and 6870 is moot. the 6870 has been on the market for much longer and has better saturation, the 580 was JUST released. give it a few weeks to appear in all markets.

Umm no, as I told you, we can get 6870 since day 1, but no 580 available so far, I can see the pattern that happened every time when Nvidia launched highend card, its really hard to find the product, and while everyone is talking about how hard to find 5970 in the market,.. its not the condition in here, there's plenty of it, no shortage at all.
